Beth,

I haven't been back yet. Life came up! :( I was in a car accident a

few years ago and hurt my back, which is the reason I stopped going,

because the doctor told me I couldn't. And now that I was heading

back, it started acting up again. The good news is, my bf and I were

going to go on vacation over New Years, but he doesn't have the money

to go. I have some, but not enough to pay for both of us. So I am

going to use my money to pay for a trainer at the gym. I'll be back

after my back feels better, which should be within a week.

I'm curious, what kind of food do you eat when you eat out? I

have/had that same problem. I used to eat lunch out everyday at work,

even dinner too sometimes. I didn't care what I ate, and looking back

oh my! Did I ever consume the fat/calories! I changed what I ate,

but still ate out a lot. For instance, I will go to subway and get

one of their low fat subs. Also I dropped the mayo and replaced it

with their honey mustard sauce (its fat-free and tastes good!). Or I

would go to burger king and get their chicken whopper jr. with no

mayo and a baked potato. I like dipping it in BBQ sauce. Very low

fat! Just making changes like that has saved me a lot of

calories/fat, yet I don't feel deprived!

Welcome Ann!

Yes, new members are usually moderated for a little while. Although,

I'm not sure who the moderator is these days, or for how long it will

last. Just hang in there.

You've come to the right place for support and friends. This is a

great group of men and women! I encourage you to read some of the

past posts and to post whenever you feel the urge, daily, or reply to

everyone. However you feel comfortable.

My name is Kirsten. I'm 25 and currently battling a good 80 lbs of

excess weight.

Welcome again and best of luck. I'm glad you are here.

Kirsten

Ann,

It did post. They just take a little while to post sometimes. I am a

moderator but you don't have to wait. You can post right away.

Darren,

Hey thanks for checking back. I had been here for a year then my

computer died on me and I just got a new one in October so I am back.

I'm Gena, was cofounder when it was a club and am a moderator now.

Although with the new set up I don't feel like that is really much.

Anyway... a bit about me, I'm 37, married 19 yrs, have 2 girls Niki 18

(19 this month) and Cassie 12. Niki is in the Army so yes, I am

familiar with how military things go. Her boyfriend is Coast Guard in

fact and stationed out of Kodiak, Alaska.

I have struggled with weight since I got pregnant with Niki, my

thyroid went inactive and I went from 128 to 210. At my heaviest Oct

2000 I was 284. So far am down to 205. It was 195 but had a bit of a

setback last summer and the last few weeks of 2002 but am getting back

on track. I hope to lose at least 40 lbs in 2003. Your expert advice is

always appreciated. Nice to meet you.

T,

Welcome to the group, but unfortunately you do seem to have a reason to

be here. I am also so very sorry if your son has this disease. I

cannot imagine how hard it will be for you if this is try. I will tell

you the truth, I do think that there is a reason for your Doctors to be

worried about your son, but I would certainly wait for the results of

your son's biopsy. I will tell you though, I have just had a transplant

and I never felt bad. If it weren't for my monthly visits to my

nephrologists, I would never have known that I had a disease except for

the many meds and weight loss. Anyway, except for being more

conscientious of keeping up with the disease, your child can feel quite

" normal " . The thing that I find interesting, is that your son is

showing symptoms so early in his life. I don't think there is anyone on

this list who has a child so young with IGA. I hope that the diagnosis

is negative though. God bless you and your son. You are in my prayers.

I hope that you keep us informed about the outcome of his biopsy.

Introduction

Hello everyone. I am new to this list so just thought I'd give you

all a little background info.

I have had microscopic hematuria and proteinuria for at least ten

years. Last 24 hr urine collection showed I was losing 2 grams a day.

I am under the care of a nephrologist and am having yearly

appointments and am 100% healthy. No definate diagnosis, just mild

glomerulonephritis.

However the reason I joined this list is because of my son.

Ben is 2 years old. We first noticed very visible blood in his urine

6 months ago, just before his second birthday. He is now under the

care of a pediatric nephrologist. He usually has at least one pee a

day with very noticable blood in, and all other times it is there,

but microscopic.

When he has a cold or cough his wee goes almost black til he

recovers. For the last two months his nephrologist has been having

him do two weekly, first morning urine tests.

The nephrologist is 90% sure it is IgA.

I know that 6 months ago his protein/creatinine level was 1.5.

3 months ago his protein/creatinine level was 1.7

And for all of his recent two weekly tests the protein/creatinine

levels were betweek 2 and 3.

I understand normal levels are below 0.2.

Ben is having a kidney biopsy next month to confim the diagnosis of

IgA, and I think will then be given steroids.

To be honest I'm not sure how concerned I should be. Ben seems in

perfect health, and pretty much all the nephrologist has said is that

with the amount of protein he is losing, kidney failure is likely to

be sooner rather than later. What do you think?

Ultrasound scans, X-rays and blood tests appeared normal 6 months

ago. Bloods will be repeated when he has his biopsy. Blood pressure

is 90/48 which I also believe is normal.

In the back of my mind I believe that nothing is wrong with him, and

like me he'll continue to be healthy with no change.

Sorry this has gotten a tad long. I'd appreciate any opinions.

Jen,

That is simply the single worst biopsy story I've ever heard. Was this a

teaching hospital? Do you mind my asking where?

  • 1 year later...

Let me back track a little. My name is Barb and I live in NH. 6 years ago at the age of 60 I had a Whipple procedure to remove a benign pancreatic tumor. Since then I have had problems with gas and bloating and diarrhea. It was attributed to having only 1/2 stomach and 1/2 pancreas, no gall bladder and no duodenum. I developed diabetes 4 years ago and have had lots of,trouble conrolling BG readings because of digestive problems. I went to a new

gastro 3 weeks ago and he did some blood work which turned up the Celiac - I am not sure what tests he did.

I also have CHF, malnourishment (which I realize now mayu be caused by the CD), hypertension and mitral valve regurg. This has all happened since the Whipple - up to that point in mylife I was healthy as a horse.

That is my history - I have not met with a dietician yet and I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks for reading

ps my right wrist is in a splimnt so am doing a crappy job of hunt and peck - and me a Katharine Gibbs graduate :)
