It's probably safe to start at 4,000 IU's daily. My son

takes 7,000 daily. It's very difficult to become toxic on Vit D.

Also, this is something you can follow with a simple blood test.

Subject: Vitamin D dosage?

I'm looking into starting my son on some extra

Vitamin D, specifically the drops from Carlson. Is there a specific dosage I

should be looking at?

I think I have heard 1000 IU per 25 lbs of weight, as a daily dosage. That was from somewhere on Dr. Mercola's site. He had it in IU per kg, and in one of the comments on that particular article, someone simplified it the way I just had it. I round it up and give my kids 2000 IU but I know if I give them more from time to time, it is not going to hurt them... I believe there are people who take 100,000 IU every day for a week to ward of flu, etc. So anyway, not something I worry about too much. :-) --- ToniTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Tue, July 20, 2010 9:53:14 AMSubject: Vitamin D dosage?

Well, too much vitamin D *can* be toxic but it is rare and the toxicity level is pretty high. It also depends on how much you actually need. It takes a long time, believe it or not, to increase Vit D levels. I was right on the cusp of having Ricketts. I was taking 50k IU 3x a week and it still took forever to get my vitamind d levels up. And I have to take a maintenance dose daily. I think there are people that actually take that same dose daily for a while before they see their levels rise. My son's blood work just came back and he is still low and he's been on 1k IU a day *forever* (a year maybe?) and we just had to up it to 2k IU a day. Plus it's in his multi. Plus the food he eats. And we live in sunny SoCal. *Sigh* I have to laugh at that. How can a California resident possibly be close to Ricketts!?!If you want a better understanding of where his levels are, you can get a blood draw through labcorp so it's covered by insurance.

Oh yeah... that's kinda what I meant. I know it can be toxic and *was* stressing about how much I was giving, like OH NO I GAVE 3 DROPS instead of two, kind of thing... and now I am not stressing... Like today I didn't give any and tomorrow I might give 3... not a huge deal unless I am giving 25 (insane amt) of drops for a good long time... ;-) --- ToniTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Tue, July 20, 2010 2:23:37 PMSubject: Re: Vitamin D dosage?

My kids get 5000 iu's a day and they are increasing but still low and we live in

AZ. I am not telling anyone to do this amt of course. My kids some days get

10000 iu's.

What kind of D do you use? I have been using Carlson's drops for about a year and my son's D levels are very low still. Probably using about 1000 IU. Any other brands out there to try.MargieMy kids get 5000 iu's a day and they are increasing but still low and we live in AZ. I am not telling anyone to do this amt of course. We use Pure Encapsulations. But it will be very hard to raise really low levels

with only 1000 iu's per day.

You are using vit. D3 right? We used Vitamin Research Products, Inc. and levels are finally normal. Being in the sun, of course, is the best way to get vit. D. 20 min. Of sunshine before applying sunblock. We do not use sunblock but if u have to Mercola.com has some good natural sunblock. Amy A. Sent from my iPhone

My 40 pound son needed 5,000iu/day for 6 months before his numbers even budged.

I would not go higher than this is you are not monitoring levels.

Low vitamin D is considered a lyme marker, although I know it can come from any

chronic infection.
