Guest guest
Wow, yes we have experienced this and with other things. Her inability is to relate a celebration and gifts other than to a birthday. One way you could approach it is with the calender. Get her a magnetic calendar that has all the dates and different events that could be planned in a month. Each month setup the calendar. This way she can see that there are different holidays which people celebrate that are different from a birthday. Explain to her what a birthday actually is and why it is celebrated for 1 person at a time. Then come up with visual categories of holidays where people don't give gifts such as thanksgiving, 4th of July, and then another category that includes gift giving which would include: Mother's Day, Christmas, Hanukah, Birthdays etc. If she sees a visual picture of holidays with gifts vs. holidays without that might help, as it did with my son. Get a big piece of oak tag and make it a whole project, then hang it on the wall so she can refer to it often. Debbie Matasker mom to 8 today!! w/CHARGE, 10, andra 5 [Norton AntiSpam] not understanding Mothers Day Today has left MacKenzie very confused. She can not understand what all the fuss is about. My birthday is not until Dec. and she simply will not accept that there is a day to celebrate mom's in general. They worked on this in school and she was quite upset about making gifts when it wasn't my birthday. Anyone have any similiar experiences? Guest guest
Another thing we have done is 'experience boxes' or books, which contain remnants/pieces or small objects associated with the day - A piece of wrapping paper, a pressed flower, a ribbon, etc. Each year other pieces from the day can be added on the day. The box/book can be taken out and referred to and used to talk about before the 'special' day, added to during the day and then used for conversation after the 'special' day. Draw attention to differences of special days, eg. Mother's Day does not have candles on a cake (not in Oz anyway!) Birthdays do...etc. Sharon from West Oz >Wow, yes we have experienced this and with other things. Her inability is >to relate a celebration and gifts other than to a birthday.
