Guest guest
homeopathySubject: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr oldTo: mb12 valtrex Received: Sunday, July 4, 2010, 7:26 PM What can I use (natural or meds) for my 6 yr old PDD-NOS to treat anxiety? He functions on such a different level at home vs other places. More stims & less language--- yes there are sensory issues but have been addressing them for some time. I believe there is just an underlying level of anxiety that takes over when he is out of his comfort zone -- it is like he flips a switch and becomes "Mr Autistic" He expends a tremendous amount of energy trying not to communicate or engage with others (besides family/therapists and few known friends of family) and I believe a large part of this is anxiety. Perhaps if I can lower the anxiety - he will be more relaxed and try to engage and talk more??? Any suggestions -meds or natural are appreciated. Guest guest
my son who is the same age does this too. He get easily overstimulated when among crowds..I know he's had enough when he starts bolting/ misbehaving. I look for signs of over stimulation. When he's on he's own turf he's a much happier kid. He just functions better. Natural Supplements we've used that calm include magnesium plus gaba, calcium (powder), Min chex and Drenatrophin PMG for adrenal support. The last two are available through Standard Process a division of Whole Foods (see link). http://www.standardprocess.com/display/StandardProcessCatalog.spi?ID=103 We met with a Naturopathic doctor to get help with this. Guest guest
We use GABA. 375 mg seems to be enough for my kids 35 and 40 lbs (almost 4, 5.5) DAN! says we can go up to 750mg but we don't... I usually only give it once a day in the am. But sometimes they could probably use a second dose. --- ToniTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Sun, July 4, 2010 3:26:52 PMSubject: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old What can I use (natural or meds) for my 6 yr old PDD-NOS to treat anxiety? Guest guest
Pamela, could you say what a typical starting dose for GABA would be for a 41 lb, anxious 5 yr old? Do you have a favorite brand? Also, if his anxiety is bad at school, would I dose in the am? I tend to do most of calming stuff at bedtime, other wise.Thank you, Alison M RE: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old Valerian Root, GABA, 5-HTP Pamela From:mb12 valtrex [mailto:mb12 valtrex ] On BehalfOf mgc1702Sent: Sunday, July 04, 2010 3:27 PMTo: mb12 valtrex Subject: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old What can I use (natural or meds) for my 6 yrold PDD-NOS to treat anxiety? Guest guest
Not Pamela, :-) but I give my 36 lb 3.5 year old and my 40 lb 5.5 yr old 375mg GABA every morning. I was giving just my son 250 mg in the morning before pre-k and sometimes in the afternoon if he had martial arts. I didn't want to try upping the dose till school was out. We started using GABA-calm, a combo product, now we are just using plain 750 mg GABA tablets from The Vitamin Shoppe, split in half. I thought I may have answered this before... if I have, sorry for being redundant and for answering when you were asking Pamela. :-) Oh, my DAN says don't give it with a meal that has a lot of protein, as it affects absorption. --- ToniTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Mon, July 5, 2010 8:16:56 PMSubject: RE: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old Pamela, could you say what a typical starting dose for GABA would be for a 41 lb, anxious 5 yr old? Guest guest
wow! if your son doesn't sound just like mine! teachers thought i was in denial, and i thought they were just plain crazy because the difference in my son's functioning can be night and day. but i know EXACTLY what you mean - they almost "blend in" with typicals until something happens - then BAM!..you're quickly reminded. I will tell you from our experience with my son who is 8 that YES, it is anxiety. Because they don't know how to properly respond to new, different, and uncomfortable situations. (It took me a long time to figure this out). It is easy for our kids at home because they are familiar with their surroundings, the way the household functions, routines, our expectations of them, and even the way we communicate with one another. I think we naturally (without even realizing it) accomodate their deficiencies in communication. So at home, there is much less of a struggle as there would be out in the world because others will not typically accomodate the way we do. Make sense? If you son has a decent amount of language, then the best thing you can do for him is work with social stories. If you can teach him strategies for "what if" situations, he'll be more prepared when situations arise. There are books out there for nearly every situation under the sun. Talk about people. alot. talk about different jobs people do and where they work - talk about how people look different and sound different. you can make it fun! L-theanine is a supplement that can be very helpful and it certainly can't hurt to try, but right now, more than anything, your kiddo needs experiences. I know it makes it hard sometimes, but when you have to do all those little things like mail a package, take him along and have him help. let him push the lawn mower - and slide the debit card through and enter the pin# in the check -out line. All these small experiences will build his confidence. pretty quickly, too! Play "store", "libarary" and "picnic" with him so you can use the opportunity to show him what kind of conversations typically take place.Whenever opportunity presents itself, prepare him for a new situation and let him know what to expect before he arrives so he can get a handle on things. My son was exactly like yours, he could, in an instant, just shut himself off. So I made the huge mistake of avoiding situations that were uncomfortable for him instead of exposing him to more. Please don't make the same mistake I made. Get him out there and prepare him whenever you can. I always imagine it to be like someone plopping me down in the middle of China and saying "Ok, go live!" Easier said than done when you don't understand language and expectations, cultures..etc. etc. Good luck! I know he'll do great!TammyTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Sun, July 4, 2010 3:26:52 PMSubject: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old What can I use (natural or meds) for my 6 yr old PDD-NOS to treat anxiety? Guest guest
we use oxytocin -- it's amazing! To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Wed, July 7, 2010 4:25:34 PMSubject: Re: Help for Anxiety - 6 yr old Oxytocin (Rx nasal spray) works almost instantly. GABA, 5HTP and L theanine can help. These are all treating symptoms, which we need to do while we work on the underlying cause but I know people that swear by the oxytocin. My son doesn't have anxiety issues so I have no first hand experience with it. Your DAN can Rx.
