I know the song was playing in Dallas and in Atlantic City, so I think it was a nationwide, top of the charts kind of thing. The lead singer, whose name escapes me 30 years later, used to stay so stoned on Marijuana that he would forget the words to the songs. They had limited studio time (expensive in those days). Ina Gadda Da Vida was supposed to be In the Garden of Eden-he screwed up the words. The epic song has few sensical words for a 17 minute song. Talking about music, I finally found Jefferson Airplanes' " Bless It's Little Pointed Head " album on CD. They don't make music like that any more. I put it in the case with my Buffalo Springfield, CSN (same guys different group), and Blood Sweat and Tears. By then the kiddies(me) and the hard core Church of Christ(my parents) were suppose to be asleep. Once I heard it, I knew working on an ambulance was for me.
