Fibroids are, by definition, benign. However, they are a symptom of having

too much estrogen. One risk factor of getting endometrial cancer is also

having too much estrogen. I'm not sure about uterine sarcoma(smooth muscle

cancer). So, it is possible for a benign fibroid and some type of cancer to

show up in the same uterus.

Jackie,

Your feelings sound pretty normal to me. I went through the same exact

reaction when I was first diagnosed, 14 years ago. I was only 27 at the time,

and never ever thought about being diagnosed with cancer. I went to my doctor

for a routine checkup. I did not have symptoms either. She found a lump in my

neck. The biopsy showed metastatic papillary carcinoma. I had a modified

right radical neck dissection and 3 treatments with Radioactive Iodine. They

found cancer in 12 out of 13 lymph nodes, cancer on the jugular vein, and

cancer on my trachea.

The only complications that I had were the normal ones related to

hypothyroidism. I could not take thyroid hormones for weeks before scans and

treatments, so got pretty sick (you will see the group call this Hypo-hell).

I am alive and well 14 years later. Please reach out to others for support.

Don't keep your feelings to yourself. You don't have to do it alone. Let me

know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Hang in there,

Jim

Dear Suba v

May I shared my experience with you as I think your case sounds a bit similar to

mine.

i am a Malaysia and was diagnosed with multiple fobroids sometime April 1998.

they never caused any problems and doctors told me to wait and see. Been going

for tdoctors at 2 different places, a private specialist and doctors at HUKM

[government sponsored]. size of fibroids were constant.

Started to get pms pain since Oct 2001 [never, never had before since day 1 I

started to have period in my teens].

March 2002 scanned and found fibroids grown larger, about 4-5 weeks pregnancy

size. [enlarged uterien]. Doctor at Tung Shin advised to have hysterectomy.

Scared the hell out of me. YOu see, I cannot comprehend how these fibroirds

which had been years with me could finally cause major problem. I asked what if

he only remobved fibroids and not uterine, he said the thing [uterine] left

behind will be very tiny and time in operation will be long. I suppose he is not

very sure fo teh outcome.

recommended to see Professor Jamal at Hospital UKM. 1st time met him. Nice and

patient doc. Said he basically agreed with Tung Shin docr because of the no of

friboirds involved - 5 [in 1998 was 2-3]. On inquiring further, he told me to go

and see him in Oct again as he wish toe xplore my case with radiologists for

embolisation.

You would have read many mails on embolisation or UAE in this chat group.

Patient after UAE was able to conceive.

One of the mails said, such operation is good to be carried out at learning

hospital [i would think of HUKM] as you need more than 1 doctor attending to

you.

In terms of distance, may be you wish to consider HUKM. I have not asked them

how many cases they had performed. My own panel doctor who recommended me to

this particular Professor Jamal had commenetd to me he is patient and nice.

When I read some of the participants here were able to have a huge no of

fibroirds removed and uterien in tact, that confirmed my belief further.

However, unless I am able to go to one of those good doc as mentioned in this

web, how else but settle with what available here?

You may contact HUKM for further details.

suba v wrote: Hi everyone,

I'm new to this group, having only subscribed a couple of days ago.

I found out i had a large fibroid on the outside wall of my uterus. only

after i got pregnant. Fortunately, it didn't cause much problems, except

slight pain once or twice and i starting vomiting each time i ate a few days

before giving birth cos there was so much pressure on my stomach. I managed

to carry my daughter to full term and deliver naturally. She's now a healthy

and beautiful 1 year old. When i read some of the stories here i feel really

lucky not to have experienced any complications.

I've never had any problems from my fibroid. But my Dr is advising me to

have it removed through a Myomectomy cos i'm considering having another

child in the future and she says having the fibroid may pose a risk.

However, i'm worried abt going through surgery - the pain and how it will

affect my chances of having another baby. I live in singapore and UAE is

till in the testing stages here, so that doesn't seem like an option.

Has anyone here been able to conceive after going through a surgery to

remove a fibroid similar to mine?

There are a few of us on this group who have had very successful

uterine fibroid embolizations. Search the archives for " UFE " or " UAE "

or " embolization " . There is also an " EMBO " group on yahoo. Tons of

info is available there. Search the archives on the " embo " group for

your specific questions and most if not all will be answered.

Dear Marilyn. I was put on Synthroid right after my tt, which was on 6-2001.They

keep upping the dosage until they couldn't up it ant more, my endo at the time

said he didn't know why it wasn't working. Well no offense but if he doesn't

know why how the hell wouldn't I know why, I then found this group and started

to read all the different posts, I then became concern I wasn't getting the

right treatment.I finally got a appointment in Aug. with the new endo. But

meantime it is scary to have to life like this not knowing. I was hypo before I

had my tt but I wasn't like this. I really can't function at all. I hope God

gives me strength till Aug 7th. Do you think it is my meds. I think so but When

I was on Synthroid I felt no different at all. So I don't know what's wrong but

I thought maybe we could figure something out together even if we are wrong at

least it is better then sitting here going crazy. While the doctors are saying I

am fine. Terry

(unknown)

Is there a reason you taking Thyrolar rather than one ot the

synthetic thyroid medicaions such as Synthroid, Levoxyl,

Unithroid?

Your 'mental confusion' sounds as if you might be hypo. I know

you said that your Dr. indicated that your levels are 'fine', but

thyroid levels that are considered fine for most people are not

necessarily fine for those of us who have had thyroid cancer. It

could be that the Thyrolar is not keeping your thyroid levels in the

correct range.

Hopefully your new Endo will put you on a more traditional

medication that will keep your blood levels in the appropriate

range. Tell us more about your situation....how long since your

TT and is the mental confusion typical of how you have felt the

entire 6 months on Thyrolar? Is that the only replacement

medication you have taken?

Marilyn

> Sue Thank you for answering me, I thought I was going crazy,

Here is my question, I am on Thyrolar-2 at 120mgs once a day

for about 6 months now, I am having major problems thinking,

being confused, I don't understand anything I read either and I

say the wrong things all the time. I was wondering if it could be

my meds. I got a new endo but I can't see him until Aug 7th.I did

tell mt reg doctor but he said my levels are fine, it is just scary I'm

sorry if I am a little cranky I don't mean to be. This group means

everything to me. I guess I just have to get myself together. Any

advice is appreciated really, Terry in Pa

Usually when people have to keep upping their meds the most

common reason is that they are not taking them correctly (i.e. on

an empty stomach and away from other meds or supplements

such as calcium or iron). Were you taking your Synthroid on an

empty stomach?

Marilyn, Yes I was taking my meds. on A empty stomach. actuarially that was the

only medicine I was taking. I felt no difference at all on Synthroid. It was

like I was taking nothing at all and I guess that is why my endo didn't know

why. but neither did I. Well I hope this new endo can help me. Thanks

Marilyn, its Terry I went to the new endo today and he took me off the thyrolar

and put me on levoxyl 200mcg, so I am hoping I get to feel a little better soon.

Do you think this will be better for me. I also had alot of blood tests taken

today. Terry

Don't know if I can help much...but, my tumors are smaller and are in

the uterus. I have quite a few. I've never had any bleeding problems

and now I'm in menopause and not bleeding at all anymore. I have an

ultrasound every few years to keep an eye on them. I just have bad back

pain and am also have a stomach. But, I might have inherited that.

Anyway, from what I read there isn't any reason to have a hysterectomy

unless you are experiencing problems.

Not on HRT anymore....haven't shrunk the tumors when last viewed, which

was last year. And, seem to have developed more smaller ones.

I took over the counter iron tablets and it made my blood count higher than ever

before in my life, even with my extremely heavy bleeding. I had the fibroid

removed last year and it was absolutely the thing to do. My doc, head of his

dept. at UCSD teaching hosp. here in San Diego was making hyst sounds before I

printed out a list of questions Carla suggested I ask him. Suddenly hyst was the

last resort. I think he wanted his third year resident to get another hyst under

his belt before

graduation. My theory. ;-)! gg

My recommendation, do lots of research. The first step is to find out all

the specific details of exactly what you have as far as fibroids (or other

problems go).

How did your doc diagnose the fibroid? Abdominal Ultrasound (external),

Saline ultrasound (internal), MRI? How does he know you don't have

endometriosis or adenomyosis?

My personal opinion is that it is key to find out exactly what is going on

before you make any treatment decisions.

to kab8753: I had a similar situation and the 1st dr put me in a wait and

watch mode, while giving me a new bc pill. It didn't work and I too became

anemic. I then got a gyn and he did a d & c w/ a hysteroscopy and biopsy. He

then gave me a new bc pill (Lo-ovral) and I haven't been too bad. I have

fairly heavy periods but so far no mid-cycle bleeding and period that lasts

anywhere from 5 to 7 days. He said it is not a cure for the fibroids, but

let's wait and see. I have been looking at all my options and have an appt.

TCR183: What kind of pills did your dr. give you? Birth control pills?

Iron pills? In layman's terms a d & c (dilation & curretage) as described by

my dr. is basically a scrapping of the lining of the uterus. They can take a

biopsy also or do a hysteroscopy at the same time (camera that looks at the

uterus).

Hi ,

Im currently taking contraceptive pills and iron pills since im anemic caused

by heavy bleeding. My gyne recommended hyst since i have few fibroids and

the biggest is 3-4cm in size. Still not sure whether this is the right

option but im thinking of making the major step (hyst or other options ) next

year.

Terri, 3 - 4 cm is not very big; 3cm = 1.18 inch and 4 cm = 1.57 cm.

There are women in this groups who have much larger fibroids than

that. That said, depending on their location, even very small

fibroids can cause extreme bleeding symptoms, which you have.

Usually it is because they are inside the uterine cavity. Did your

doctor tell you the location of your fibroids? If one or more is

inside the uterus it may be able to be removed vaginally, with no

incision and practically NO recovery time. You can do a search of

the archives for hysteroscopic resection as this procedure is

called. I and others have posted many times about this procedure.

Good luck.

For Terri,

Mine is 6 centimeters and I have been thinking about removing the uterus

only. I am 36 and do not want more children. I sought suggestions from

this site to have support and to find any red flags in having this procedure

done and also to learn about other procedures. I am still leaning towards

the uterus removal. I am tired of the long periods and clotting. I want to

resume my normalcy of life-let me know your progress-

I'm 33, have 3 fibroids and want to keep all my parts. (I don't know if I

want children, but I know I'd prefer to keep my uterus.) I've about

reached the end of my rope with the extremely heavy bleeding, clotting, and

anemia. My gyn believes she can resolve these symptoms without

hysterectomy. We won't discuss specific treatment options until after I

have a saline infusion sonogram, which is scheduled for Thurs. (if I stop

bleeding! argh!).

I understand, and think most of us do, when you say you want to resume

" normalcy of life. " It's certainly my object. I really believe you should

have the treatment that you and your doctor think is best for you, and hope

none of us are bullied into a treatment we'd prefer to avoid. Good luck to

you.

Hi ,

I guess we are in the same boat - also leaning towards removing uterus only.

But i still want to make my options option. The downtime of 5 weeks for hyst

though does not appeal to me.
