Whole Foods was a nightmare - you couldn't move in that store, let alone shop. So I decided to try Trader Joe's instead. I found some stuff, but I have a few questions:-Is almond meal the same as almond flour? The meal was all I could find. Yes, they are the same thing. -Where exactly can I find dry curd? I looked where the cottage cheese was and all I found was "small curd cottage cheese." Is this the same? It had some illegal ingredients in it. It is also under the name farmer's cheese and is going to be located in the harder cheeses section. I also looked by the regular cottage cheese my first time. The next time I asked the guy in the cheese department and he was able to show me where it was. -The butter I purchased lists "pasteurized cream" and "annatto added seasonally." Is this legal? From other posts on here, annato is OK. -The vanilla extract I got is made of Tahitian vanilla bean and has 35% alcohol. Is this okay? The only ingredients should be vanillla bean, alcohol, water and maybe glycerin. Anything else should be avoided. -A lot of the juices that I looked at that seemed legal were from concentrate. Are concentrated juices legal? The only juices I know that are 100% legal are Welch's 100% Grape and White Grape juice and Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice. Concentrates are illegal for at least a couple reasons: The concentrate could have been purchased from a different company to make the juice and there's no telling what's in it and it may have been made into a concentrate to boost it's sugar conent. While the sugar is legal, having it in that large of a quantity could be bad. Make sure when you buy your juice you start by diluting it 100%.Shopping was way more stressful than I thought it would be. I'm kinda disappointed that I couldn't find a lot of the things I was looking for specifically. I'm not very confident with my purchases. Still waiting on my yogurt maker to arrive so I can start the intro. You don't have to have the yogurt maker to start the intro. I was not even able to tolerate a TBS of yogurt or DCCC for a couple weeks on the diet. Don't let yogurt hold you back from starting!!!As always, thanks for your comments.-Marisa You rock. If it is flecked with brown, it includes skins, which makes it a more advanced food than flour made from blanched almonds. mom to -12, SCD 4/23/04 Pecanbread Moderator

That's fine, though more advanced. But you won't need it for the first few weeks anyway. You can order almond meal online in some more bulk here: http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD & ProdID=618 or: http://www.digestivewellness.com/subcategoryitems-digestive_wellness-nut_flours-\ 24- 11.html > -Where exactly can I find dry curd? The next time I asked the guy in the cheese department and he was able to show me where it was. Depends on the store, I usually find it near cottage cheese. But it is rectangular shaped and wrapped up. It is definitely not small curd cottage cheese - that's just cottage cheese. It looks like this: http://friendshipdairies.com/products/detail_product_farmer_cheese.php If you don't get friendship brand, make sure your brand is 0 carbs. > -The butter I purchased lists " pasteurized cream " and " annatto added seasonally. Kedem organic grape juice is also legal and there is the Knudsen Just Juice line as well. (Only Just Juices) For example: http://www.knudsenjuices.com/products/detail.aspx? groupID=7 & categoryID=53 & flavorID=143 & productID=521 Just to confuse you, some of these latter have concentrates, but they were checked out and are legal. So does Heinz and 's tomato juice have concentrate, but that is legal, too. Here is the list of juices at Pecanbread http://www.pecanbread.com/new/legalfoods1.html BTW, there is a lot of helpful info at the pecanbread website for new people, so that is good to look over/study. You can also buy clear honey in bulk at Costco if you have one near you. Or also at Digestive Wellness, website above. Mara
Guest guest
Hey Misty, At the time when I was starting out Carol Frilegh Greatly cautioned me about buying " almond meal " from supermarkets. She said it is best to buy it from Lucy's. A couple of reasons why; The almonds can have skins on them " Bob's Redmill " brand is processed in the same facility as illegals and traces can still be left on the machines. Also, Lucy's has a fluffier texture and is always fresh. (Don't remember the rest of the reasons but those were a few) Jodi SCD 6 months Crohn's/Colitis > > -Is almond meal the same as almond flour? Guest guest
Jodi, another reason is that it could be ransid from sitting on the shelf. Then you wouldn't know if the almond flour was bothering you or that it was bad. Guest guest
Hi Marisa, > So I went to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's today. Whole Foods was a nightmare - you > couldn't move in that store, let alone shop. So I decided to try Trader Joe's instead. I am unsure of where you live. I live in NYC and the stores can be a complete Urban Zoo full of MADNESS! I find sometimes it is best to call the stores and ask ahead of time what is the busiest hours in general and if they are packed for the next couple of hours? It is so much easier for me to read labels and like shop in peace. I personally find on SCD when I shop that I spend most of my time looking for delicious local fresh produce, the meat stand, fish counter and cheeses. Pre-packaged food stuff is a constant source of disappointment for me. Plus, I don't want to take chances because I don't know if something is legal/illegal. I'm so happy Whole Foods and Trader's have good return policies <grin>. You'll also get into the habit of going there and coming home, checking out the BTVC site for the illegal/illegal list and then posting the question here if it isn't. I post many questions I rather ask and look stupid than be sorry. > -Where exactly can I find dry curd? I looked where the cottage cheese was and all I found > was " small curd cottage cheese. " Is this the same? It had some illegal ingredients in it. Dry Curd Cottage cheese if also known as " Farmer's Cheese " not to be too confusing to you- sometimes what is labeled as Farmers Cheese for us is not legal... since it isn't really the DCCC! this is very annoying to me as I have made this mistake a few times now. I once ate the wrong one and got really sick. Pay attention there are no added ingredients and on the label it says %0 carbs. If you are unsure try to find the label online or post ingredients here and nutritional panel (carb listing) and ask. One of the old timers can guide you. > Shopping was way more stressful than I thought it would be. I'm kinda disappointed that I > couldn't find a lot of the things I was looking for specifically. I'm not very confident with my > purchases. Still waiting on my yogurt maker to arrive so I can start the intro. I found that shopping in the beginning was kind of stressful for me too. I never felt I had enough stuff... I found that as I eased into the diet it got and is getting easier (after all I am still a total newbie screwing up left and right and my ignorance gets the best of my intentions at times). There are many many illegals out there but once I got the drift I shoot to the exact sections I need to shop in. Many foods are " advanced " in general. So like don't worry yourself too much with things like almond flours, nuts and hard to digest foods. There is a good guideline on PecanBread. That is just a guideline and not like rules set in stone; It will give you an idea what you need now. http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#beyond Also, a really good tip that I wish I would of known from the beginning is make A LOT of freezer space. I cannot emphasize this enough! Like how much chicken soup can one person make for crying out loud?!? It gets easier..
