your virus IS a hoax

dutchpat, when i read the " JDBGMGR.EXE " part of your e-mail, i remembered

something... so i went to snopes.com to verify whether or not your virus

warning was in fact a hoax.

it was.

" jdbgmgr " is shorthand for java debug manager program. you found it in your

system because it's in (virtually everyone's) computer system... it's a

regular part of the computer programming. for *most* people, having it

deleted isn't a huge problem, so that is fortunate.

so yes, this means you may have to re-e-mail everyone in your original list,

to give them heads-up to please disregard your prior e-mail, and NOT to

follow those delete instructions. i'd also go back to your original person

who warned you... and ask them to please, in the future, run

*e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g* past snopes (or a similar hoax/debunking-type site)

before e-mailing out something that has not been verified to be true. we

should all do this, always, even if we receive a warning from a " trusted "

friend. here's what snopes says about the teddybear virus, via their

" computer " hoax link:

" Like the SULFNBK.EXE hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as the

" Bear Virus " ) attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly

innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems.

In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, a Java Debug Manager program

used by the Microsoft Java runtime engine. This file is included as part of

a standard Windows installation and is not a " virus. " (The icon for this

file is a graphic of a bear like the one shown to the left.)

If you deleted this file, don't sweat it -- JDBGMGR.EXE is only important to

programmers who use Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 to develop Java programs. Its

absence will not cause your PC to stop working or interfere with your

applications, so if you're not a Java developer, you don't have to worry

about restoring it. Consider the experience a lesson learned about the

perils of believing and acting upon unverified e-mail warnings.

Windows 2000 and Windows ME include a Windows File Protection (WFP) feature

that will recover shared files such as JDBGMGR.EXE if they are overwritten

or deleted. Users of other Windows operating systems can only retrieve

JDBGMGR.EXE by reinstalling the Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) component,

but Microsoft is no longer offering it as a download.

Sorry everyone -- another one of those d****d virus things !!!

Although I received this message from a Dutch friend, I have translated it

into English first as I have more English speakers in my address book than

not.

The Dutch version follows the English version.

Today, I received this message from someone on my address book. Despite the

use of a permanent virus scanner such as Norton or McAfee this virus can be

transmitted unknowingly.

I have also found The Teddybear virus (jdbgmgr.exe) on my computer. It

appears to have bypassed both my virus scanner programmes!

I have deleted it as suggested below. Probably everyone in my address book

is also infected !! Please check to see if you are also infected. If you

find the virus programme, please inform everyone in your address book as

they are most likely infected too.

Apparently the virus remains silent for 14 days before any damage occurs. It

is automatically sent through Messenger and your e-mail address book.

You can remove the virus as follows:

Go to Start and then Find.

Select Files / Folders and type the virus name ( jdbgmgr.exe ). Check your C

disk and any other hard disks you might have, as well as all sub-folders

(directories/folders)

Click on Find.

The virus has a teddybear icon and the name jdbgmgr.exe

DO NOT OPEN IT !!!!!!

If you find it, go to Edit and click on Select All. Again - don't open the

file.

Go now to File and select Delete. The file(s) will be sent to the Recycle

Bin.

Go to Recycle Bin and click Delete or Empty Recycle Bin.

Now:

Open Create Mail.

Copy and Paste this message.

Click on the address book icon next to To:

Select all the names and add to BCC.

Send message.

Ik kreeg vandaag het onderstaande bericht, van iemand die in mijn

adresboek

staat. Ook ik had dit virus reeds gekregen ondanks het permanente

gebruik van een virusscanner, maar kon het verwijderen volgens

onderstaande.

Het Teddybeer virus (jdbgmgr.exe) is op mijn computer gekomen. Ik heb

het gedelete en adviseer jullie dit ook te doen aan de hand van de

hieronder beschreven methode. Omdat jullie in mijn adresboek voorkomen

ben je geïnfecteerd. Dit virus is toch ondanks alle maatregelen buiten

mijn medeweten op de computer gekomen en naar jullie doorgestuurd.

Stuur dit bericht naar de personen in jullie adresboek. Ook zij zijn

geïnfecteerd.

Wees er zeker van dat je dit bericht per BCC verstuurd naar

iedereen in jouw adresboek, zodat niemand uit jouw adresboek het

emailadres van iemand anders kan vaststellen.

Ik heb de volgende handelingen uitgevoerd en heb het virus eenvoudig

kunnen verwijderen. Het virus (genaamd jdbgmgr.exe) wordt niet

gevonden door Norton Antivirus of McAfee antivirus scanners.

Het virus zit rustig 14 dagen te wachten voordat het schade gaat

aanrichten. Het wordt automatisch verstuurd door Messenger en door het

Adresboek of je nu wel of niet emails verstuurd naar je adressen. Hier

komt hoe je kunt checken of het virus aanwezig is en hoe je er vanaf

kan komen.

Ga naar Start, na dan naar Zoeken/Find

Kies voor file/folders en geef de naam van het virus in = jdbgmgr.exe

Zorg ervoor dat je zeker de C schijf en alle andere harddisks

controleert en alle sub-folders (directories/mappen)

Klik nu op Zoeken/Find

Het Virus heeft een icoon van een Teddybeer met de naam jdbgmgr.exe.

Open het niet!!!!!!

Ga nu, indien gevonden, naar Bewerken (boven in de menubalk) en

klik Alles selecteren aan. Niet openen!!!!!

Ga nu naar Bestand/File boven in de menubalk en kies voor

Verwijderen/Delete. De file(s) wordt nu naar de Prullenbak/Recycle

Bin gegooid.

Ga nu naar de Prullenbak/Recycle Bin en Verwijder/Delete het virus

jdbgmgr daar ook. Men kan ook de Prullenbak leegmaken aanklikken.

Als het Virus gevonden is bent je genoodzaakt alle personen van je

adresboek hiervan op de hoogte te brengen zodat zij dit virus ook

kunnen verwijderen.

Doe nu het volgende:

a) Open een nieuw emailbericht

Klik op het icoon van het adresboek links naast " Aan " / " TO " c)

Kies alle namen en voeg deze toe bij " BCC "

d) Kopieer dit bericht

e) Voer bij onderwerp VIRUS in.

f) Plak dit bericht in het emailbericht ... en verstuur
