Guest guest
mercury thermometer 10 mins in the armpit or 3 mins in the mouth Lynda thermometers What kind of thermometers are you all using? I bought a digital basal thermometer but it reads consistenly lower than the mercury thermometer. So I then bought the glass thermometer from Dr. 's site. I'm not sure about it either. It says to use it for 3 mins. If I only wait that long my temp is low but if I wait a few more mins it goes up more. I just don't know what to trust. Guest guest
I bought one of Dr. s geratherm thermometers and it worked fine. I didn't like how thick it was making it hard to hold in the mouth. Then I found out that my doctor got a line of mercury thermometers so I bought one from him. My old mercurys quit working after MANY MANY years of use. I always hold it under the tongue for 5 minutes. My understanding from years of research is that the mercury is the most accurate. Bummer that they out lawed them. I NEVER broke one off in my mouth and I was ALWAYS sick growing up. Hugs, Carol B > What kind of thermometers are you all using? Guest guest
Carol, When you used Dr. 's did you leave in the recommended 3 mins or did you do 5 mins? Guest guest
I didn't realize you could do it for only 3 mins in the mouth. Here I've been doing it for 10 mins in my mouth. Maybe that is why I was getting a higher reading? I have read that if you take your temperature once then take it again right after that each reading will be higher than the last. Guest guest
The new Digitals, I've seen, as simply not as accurate as the old mercury... Do you have other folks living with you? Can you take their temps to see what the thermometer is registering and then compare that to the temp that you are getting? That will give you a ball park start point and then just monitor your changes. It's not the ideal situation, but would help???? I have an old mercury that I will be guarding with my life! hehehehehe Topper () On Tue, 23 Mar 2004 10:30:09 -0600 " Shelli " writes: > What kind of thermometers are you all using? Guest guest
I used to belong to Dr. s forum wich no longer exists. He would frequent it himself. He recommends taking your temp for 5 minutes. No less and no longer so YES I did 5 minutes with his thermometer. Hugs, Carol B
Guest guest
I think that's because you are working the muscles under your tongue to hold it in. This warms the mouth. If doing it in the mouth, I always try to get in a position to relax as much as possible. DebbieK Re: thermometers I didn't realize you could do it for only 3 mins in the mouth. Guest guest
I just did a test. First I used the glass thermometer from Dr. and it said 98.2 after 5 minutes then about a 1/2 hour later I tried the digital basal theremometer and it says 97.7 even though I've been moving around and I drank some coffee about 15 mins before this. I then took my temp with the mercury thermometer and it said 98.0. I just honestly don't know if my temp is low or not. As for taking my temp before getting out of bed...I sleep in a heated water bed and I read somewhere that your temp readings aren't accurate if you sleep in a water bed or under a heated blanket. Who would think just taking a temp would be so frustrating!? Shelli Have you seen/tried the digital basal thermometers? They are more accurate than the regular digital. Debbie K.
