Guest guest
I posted a message last week regarding my baby's rash - thought maybe it was heat rash since its been hot and we dont have A/C in WA state. She had been wearing the band full time for a few days and then on Saturday she woke up with terrible rash all over her head and face, wherever the helmet touched her skin. All the responses I recieved, and from the orthosis, said it was probably heat rash. It would get a little better when we left the helmet off, and then would get worse when we would put it back on. Along with the rash her lympnodes on the back of her head and neck are VERY swollen, which is a sign somethings not right! Long story short, took her to the Pediatrician today and he said its defintly NOT heat rash and that she is having an allergic reaction to the helmet!! Just my luck! He gave me a prescription for some cream to give her some relief. Has anyone had this problem?? Can I put some kind of liner in the helmet so her skin isnt making direct contact to the foam?? I have a message back in to the orthosis at Hanger to find out what he has to say and find out if he's familiar with this problem. I know she needs to be wearing her helmet, but theres no way I can put it back on her with the way her skin is and I know the helmet would put pressure where her swollen lympnodes are... What am I doing to my poor baby - gee, Im not feeling guilty at all about this... Can anyone help me!! Thankyou! Guest guest
Hello Amy PLEASE do not feel guilty for putting Paige into a helmet. You are helping her, not hurting her. You say her lymph nodes are swollen. Did the doc confirm those were the Lnodes? Willow also had the swollen back don't really want to call them nodes. Our doc said that they were fluid more than anything else and that they go away when you are done with tx. With Willow it took a few wks, but indeed they went away. Also this happened more when we went to FL for vacation when it was hot. Maybe your ortho has some more advice on this. Also CT I think has a powder for their band that they use as a barrier. Maybe there is something you can use for the band you have. Your ortho hopefully can give you some more options on this. Good luck and keep us updated on what they say. Guest guest
Amy, How is Paige doing with her rash? Did the ointment help that the Pediatrician gave you to use? Have you heard back from the Hanger ortho on this? Perhaps he has some experience with babies having this sort of reaction. I have heard of a local helmet that had either disposable or stocking inserts, but I can't remember the details and haven't heard of it with any other bands or helmets since then. I am so sorry that she may be in some discomfort and that she has to be out of her band. I hope it clears up and you can give the helmet another try. The powder that I have heard CT okaying for their DOCband is Zeasorb powder to help with skin irritation related to sweating - it also has some antifungal properties. I don't know if this would help, but here is the info on it in case you want to see if your Hanger ortho would clear it for use with Paige's band (if the link is over one line long, please copy and paste the entire link to your address bar to get directed correctly): Zeasorb Super Absorbent Powder Absorbs excess perspiration, For use whenever removal of excess moisture is desired, Soothes athlete's foot, chafing, heat rash and diaper rash. Guest guest
Hello Amy, My daughter has been in her helmet for 5 weeks and we just went through 2 miserable weeks of a huge rash and swollen lymph nodes as well. We were scared she was allergic to the foam in the helmet too. I was using Loreal kids scented shampoo and rubbing alcohol to clean the helmet. The orthotist told us to stop the rubbing alchol and go back to our baby shampoo. We use and 's Baby Soft Lotion Shampoo. We tried hydrocortisone on the rash and it actually got worse. I had her wear it three hours on and 1 hour off to air and some regular baby lotion. In just two days we had much improvement. She actually had blood in her helmet the rash was so bad. They gave us a stocking to put over her head as a barrier to the foam liner, but we are going to clear up the rash first. Probably I was using too much alcohol and to much soap to clean. Orthotist said to get it cleared up, go back to full time wearing and them use alcohol once a week instead? This seems to be helping. Guest guest
My older dd has allergies to foods and sensetivities to lotions and such. She welted up and got full blown hives from a sunscreen once as well. I have found that less is more. No lotions and just clean dry skin once you find a simple cleanser that is tolerated. Rashes do best when they dry up, and do not need much in the way of lotions. I have actually rarely washed dd's face with soaps of any kind in her 5 years and she now has great skin on her face. So hang in there and do not switch lotions and such if it is clearing. Less is more with these things and helps to determine what she reacted to. Hopefully if it is the foam in the helmet, a liner will be able to allow her to tolerate wearing with good results. Good luck. Allergic reactions can be very frustrating. mish > > I posted a message last week regarding my baby's rash - thought > maybe > > it was heat rash since its been hot and we dont have A/C in WA > > state.
