Guest guest
Hi Everyone! We are still waiting for insurance approval to move forward on a DOC Band for my 5 and 1/2 month old, Connor. He has Brachycephaly. For the last 2 months the peditrician has been telling us it will sort itself out. I finally demanded seeing a specialist, who concurred we should have a band. While we're waiting I want to do everything I can to help out with repositioning. Has anyone used a U-Neck pillow at night? Is that dangerous, do you think? Connor sleeps for 11 hours every night, so I need to do something to help him out. Thanks in advance for your help!!! Kim
Guest guest
Kim, I hope you hear from your insurance soon so that you all can move ahead for treatment for Connor. I DO think that a u-neck pillow would be VERY DANGEROUS, and wouldn't recommend this idea for fear for the baby's safety. I know you must be frustrated! Remy was also a " good " sleeper in her younger months, adding up to many hours just making her plagio/brachy worse. Babies with plagio can be a little less complicated than brachy babies for nighttime repo. For example, many parents have tried attaching a wedge, bag of rice, or even a very small pillow to one side of the back of the pjs to tip the baby up, encouraging him/her to turn the head of of the flat area. One grandma over at the Cappskids board made a matching set of a snug vest with a small pillow attached to one side that worked really well for that baby! With brachy babies, tipping the head over to one side might be difficult, owing to the flatness being all across the back. Your best best is to try to get some side sleeping going on. Have you tried this or had any success with it? Connor's about at the age when they start kicking and moving right out of the sleep positioners, but some babies tolerate them a little longer. Have you tried a side sleep positioner? I has success repo'ing Remy in a side sleeping position by co-sleeping (translation: no sleep for me, unfortunately). She started to sleep on her sides all on her own right at about 5 months, but there were some nights when she went back to her old ways, and I had to co-sleep with her to ensure she stayed on her sides. At the very least you could purchase some custom memory foam (in the LINKS/REPO AND TUMMY TIME/REPO PRODUCTS folder) to present a softer sleep surface under the back of his head if he just won't cooperate. How is his sleep position during naptime? I agree with you that it is important to have some success with sleeping repo while you're waiting on your insurance approval. With brachy babies, neither the band or repo can make the head " narrower " (i.e. once the width is established, it can't be made smaller), so you might want to prevent any worsening of his brachy as best you can between now and getting the band if you have this type of concern about Connor's headshape. I'm sorry I didn't know of any better solutions, but please keep me posted on how your efforts are going! Guest guest
One member made a pillow with memory foam and posted pictures of it under..Files/Repo Headquarters/Pictures. I'm not sure if something like this would be worthwhile, but thought I would mention it. I was never able to use anything b/c moved so much during the night. Best of luck! Guest guest
Hi Christie! Thanks for all the info and input. I agree the u-neck pillow is not the way to go at night. I have tried to place Connor on his side and he just won't have it. He moves all around his crib and kicks like a nut, so staying put isn't really an option. I'll look into the memory foam. I'll keep you posted on when we get the insurance sorted out - this is turning out to be very frustrating. Everyone agrees the sooner Connor is in the band the better, yet it's going to take 3+weeks to even get started. Thanks again for taking the time to write...this group has been great for me!!! Guest guest
Hi again...I had another question regarding the memory foam...if I get a custom made piece 28 " x 52 " to cover the mattress, how thick do you think I should go? Also, This doesn't increase the chances of getting stuck in the foam does it? Thanks, Kim > > > Hi Everyone! > > > > > > We are still waiting for insurance approval to move forward on a > > DOC > > > Band for my 5 and 1/2 month old, Connor.
