Debby,

I think you handled the situation perfect....no need for both of you to be in

tears, right? I hope Adam is much better and that the tooth fairy does not

have to come anytime soon. =) Shelby is such a daredevil as well.....and I

could just see her up on a chair and within a second....down on the floor

with blood and tears everywhere.

I also want to tell you because I have not done so yet, but your letters make

me smile everytime I read them. Okay, there have been a couple that made me

cry but simply because I am a single parent as well.....and well.....you know

all to well the rest of the story. I must give my ex credit though, he is

not near as AWFUL (and I almost think that is too kind of a word) as your ex.

So thank you for who you are and for what you have become to this list.

There have been a couple of posts I have read and wished that you were soooo

much closer...I would love to help you out anyway I could. But, for now, I

think I will have to pass on the drive to Canada. :(

Make sure you hug yourself tonight as well.

Adam is one lucky boy.

Hugs,

What a great letter ......thanks for sharing. We all need to hear the good

things.

Adam had a horrible accident at school today. From what I gather it involved a

chair (he says he was standing on it--the teacher says he wasn't!), a fall and

then blood everywhere. He had put his front two teeth through his bottom lip.

I've never seen a hole so big!!!

First thing the teacher took him to the office--it was the start of recess. Now

I

am a teacher at the same school. Along comes another teacher who says to my

son's

teacher " why are you standing with him? Just because he's Debby's son? Standard

procedure is to plunk them on the bench! " Well, excuse me but when a child is

spouting buckets of blood I have NEVER heard that rule. The poor teacher didn't

know what to do.

Meantime about 800 kids (or so it seemed) came to tell me outside (I was on

duty)

that Adam was at the office because he was " hurt " . By the 8th or 10th kid--when

I

started to hear the word " lots of blood " (I was thinking a bump before this)--I

flew into the office--grabbed that " collegue " with the standard procedure

bit--didn't hear that until later so I'm glad I grabbed her--had her finish my

duty. Now I have to decide where the blood is coming from in this child who is

wailing!!!!!!!!

It took about an hour (thank God for the caretaker who happened to have a clean

cloth--only paper towels in school--not great for applying pressure!! and the

fact he had some left over popsickles in his freezer from June!!) and in an hour

I got the bleeding to stop. Scary time. Teeth seem to be OK--but he really

hollers when I wiggle one of the front ones to see if its loose.

Lesson learned: not only do I have spare sweaters, mitts, clothes, underwear,

medicine and food in my classroom now I need my own personal first aid kit!!

But the reason I share my story tonight, is that all of this happened in the

middle of the office. All teachers managed to pass by. (who could not hear his

screams anyway). Afterwards every one of the teachers who do not have kids yet

stopped to tell me the same thing " we hope when we become parents some day we

can

be as calm and collected and in control as you Debby " .

It took me awhile and I thought " of course don't all parents keep a level head

in

the face of a crisis? " With me, the melt down (and many smokes!!) happens after

the crisis has passed.

You know, it made me realize we humans are of a different " race " . The race of

parents. Yes we all are parents or we wouldn't be here...how many of you have

friends without children and see our day in and day out struggles or witness a

crisis like I had today?? I know all of you would react the same.

So I share the story to have you all give yourselves a pat on the back tonight.

We are the best things for our kids and someday they will be old enough to be

eternally grateful for us never giving up and being there every step of the way.

Be good to yourselves tonight moms and dads!!

Debby
