Guest guest
Hi Kathy, The feingold literature says that a child should be in stage one for about 6 weeks to see results, after that you can move on to stage two. With younger kids sometimes you see the results earlier. So if your daughter had been eating salicylates for a while it may take longer then 2 weeks to clear her system from it. I do not know about the supplements, feingold had a list of supplements there were ok for their program. I know that the flavored supernuthera was not OK in their list, and that is when I stopped given my son the supernuthera. As I told you before, my son used to bite his nail a lot, and to pick at the corner of his cuticles until it bled. These SI behaviors are completely gone at this point for him and I truly attribute it to the feingold program. I see the behavior return if an infraction with the high salicylate food is done. I do not remember how long it took for it to go away the first time, as I was not doing feingold for that reason ( I did not know it was related, every body used to say was sensory problems). I was doing mainly due to his hyperactivity and short attention span. Later on when I was reading more of the info from feingold material is that I saw they had nail biting as one of the behaviors and that is when I connected the dots. So I guess I would say short of checking if that is any salicylates hidden in the supplements, I would give a little more time. Also even though golden delicious are considered lower in salicylates, to this day my son can not tolerate any apples. His system just can't process it I guess. So I avoid it. I am going to start him on No Phenol soon and hope it will help. ---- Original Message ----- From: Kathy Hudson To: pecanbread Sent: Friday, March 19, 2004 3:35 PM Subject: frustrated with behavior-OT Hi all, I have done scd for a month and taken out the high phenol foods for about two weeks I guess. Abby is still picking at her fingernails! This is one of my biggest frustrations! Any advice on this? Does it take awhile to get the phenols out of the system.? Otherwise she is doing pretty good. I try not to focus on it but she'll do it sometimes until they bleed. They look horrible! Any advice for me I would surely appreciate. She is eating a very basic diet of meat, green beans, carrots, pears, golden d. apples, eggs, cashew butter, diluted pineapple juice, mango and that's about it. She takes sulfasazalzine, calcium, magnesium citrate and cream, vit,C, multi-vitamin, prilosec. I plan to add in a probiotic soon. Guest guest
Thanks , I guess 2 weeks hasn't been long enough but I just get so upset when I see her fingers bleeding. I am going to stop the golden delicious. What about carrot. Can you give too much of that? I also thought about it today and realized that I gave her Kirkman's Children's Multiple Vitamin and Mineral supplement today (half of the dose) and I tried it about a week ago (full dose) and she really seemed to act different behavior-wise. I am thinking she can't handle that multiple. Did you join the Feingold group? I guess it's a fee to get all the literature, right? Do you know of any multiple vitamins that are legal and low salicylate? Thanks so much for the support and help! Guest guest
Hi Kathy There is a fee to join them I think it was $ 65. I think the renewals are less. Don't remember. The literature is good, and you get a newsletter often with good material on it. And they always update the products tested and give you new additions and deletions. However, for kids like ours that is really not that useful because most products are certainly not scd legal. Remember their main concern is the effect of salicylates on children with ADD/ADHD. So for people following GFCF and SCD is of not that much use. I told you I was never able to leave stage one with my son, much less the more advanced part of the program. So, I don't know if it would be the best investment. I joined way before SCD. As a general rule, I would think that the hypoallergenic formulas with no flavoring and coloring would be ok with feingold. I'll look for the material tonight and check for the supplements and send you a post on the vitamins listed. They will be ok as far as feingold but you would need to check for scd. I know they have it broken down by lab and Kirkman was included. I'll send you a post tomorrow. frustrated with behavior-OT > > > Hi all, I have done scd for a month and taken out the high phenol foods for about two weeks I guess. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Cauliflower may not be a good choice to go with next. It is part of the cabbage family and even when well cooked can be more difficult to digest early in the diet. Please see http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#beyond for some alternate ideas. You mentioned cooked and pureed, but are they also peeled? There is a lot of pectin in peels - harder to digest even when cooked. Sheila UC, 20 years -- in remission after 37 mos SCD mom of SCD 22 mos Yes, everything is cooked and pureed......she is only getting pear, banana, mango, carrot and green bean. I plan to add in cauliflower soon. I am taking out the multi-vitamin today and the g.d. apple also to see if it makes a difference. She has been hitting a lot too and was very emotional yesterday afternoon (late).
Guest guest
Hi Carol, Spinach is more an individual thing. Some people are fine with it and others not. It took me a while to be tolerate it but others can eat it fairly early. Just start with small amounts well cooked (perhaps pureed in meat etc.) to try it. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I checked the feingold material and for stage one the kirkman product sited was the super nu-thera caplets. However, I also noticed that Freeda A-D-E with selenium tablets were 0k for stage one. Stage one is where all artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and high salicylates are eliminated. I would check to see if they are scd legal. Hope this help. Guest guest
Thanks, I just think she cannot tolerate that Kirkman multiple even though it is hypoallergenic. I may have to give her separate vitamins. She only gets, calcium, magnesium and C right now. I tried super-nu-thera when she was little and they made her hyper. I think it's the B-vitamins that do that to her. Kathy frustrated with behavior-OT > > > > > > Hi all, I have done scd for a month and taken out the high phenol foods > for about two weeks I guess. Guest guest
Hi Kathy - my PC has been on the fritz, I'm trying to catch up here. Everyone has great ideas for you. I'd also wonder about the supplements, what might be in those making her more sensitive... it might be hard to tell without eliminating one at a time and observing, over period of time. Guest guest
Hey, I was wondering where you have been. I am thinking now that it's a combo of the multiple vitamin, constipation and maybe the apple. She has been either giddy or crying, hitting her arms and poking me and try to pinch a little. She has not had a BM in 4 days and that is a long time for her. I gave up the Miralax and now she has to get used to her stool being harder and I think she just holds it in. The miralax made it so easy to come out.........sorry so graphic. I don't know what to do. I hate to have to resort back to the Miralax. Guest guest
I know that nut flour is supposed to wait until later in the diet but it really helps soften my stools so that I don't get so constipated. Luke, of course, does not have that issue (he was chronic diarrhea) so nut flour is not good for him right now. Guest guest
Hi , I am using pecan meal on occasion........I put some in a meatloaf last night. Success today anyway!!!!!!!!!She went in the toilet! (sometimes she has little accidents in the tub) I hate to admit that. It looked totally normal. She drank 40 oz of water today, 8 oz of homemade pear, 8 oz of diluted pineapple! She has never drank this much water in her life. I guess that is a good sign. Her behavior is MUCH better today.
