Hi,

I was just researching on vanilla when your post popped up. I need to buy

some good vanilla and came across a site for vanilla powder Ground Vanilla Bean

Powder, 1 oz.

Made from just pure ground premium Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans

It said that 1/4 tsp is equal to 1 tsp of vanilla extract pure in

alcohol.

When I was searching I saw one fermented in 100% corn alcohol.

This is why my ? is ground vanilla beans legal? I e-mailed the company to

make sure that nothing was added to prevent it from clumping.

Had not thought about Phenols for vanilla it is not on the chart at all. (I

e-mailed the allergy technician to ask.) We may be noticing a possible problem

with sal. phen. too. Not sure yet.

salicylate/vanilla??

I see there are many participating now, who have experience with Feingold or

having to limit salicylates. It's so exciting for me to have folks I can bounce

these ideas off of!! In past, I'd use that word and people look at me like I'm

speaking another language, gets kinda lonely.

Ok - so my question, have you all had your children react to vanilla? It is

SCD legal. I've tossed back and forth on this with Luke. I think I'm seeing a

cumulative phenolic reaction in him this week, not an obvious off-the-wall

reaction, but a build up all week. At first I thought it was just his seasonal

allergies making him whiney/moody, but the stimmy stuff is coming back now, too,

so here I am again wracking my brain (don't you all get REALLY tired of that

whole process?) He has had bad reactions to synthetic vanillin, that I know for

sure. But this stuff is supposed to be " pure " ... still, it's concentrated, and

my experience is that anything concentrated is bad news. I've never cooked this

much from scratch before so I can't compare to anything.

Anyway, just wondering... everything else I know of is low (fruits, veggies,

spices, etc), so I'm honing in on the vanilla?

, Did you notice on the website listing salicylates in foods that

most spices are very high except garlic, parsley, chives, coriander,

vinegar, horseradish and tandori spice? I would like to know about vanilla

too. I will check that website again.

It's such a mind game. I'm pretty well confused on the whole vanilla issue,

too. Not even sure that's what's bothering him, but the only new thing he's

had this week has been the " cookie cutter cookies " . He's been dying for a

snack so I made some Tuesday and cut them into very small hearts. I only

allow him ONE a day after a meal. The nut flour, I ground practically to

BUTTER, has not bothered him so far as far as BM's go, so I thought we were

safe with them. But this cumulative phenol type behavior has gradually

gotten worse all week... and the only ingredient in them that could possibly

bother him is the 2 tsp of vanilla. That's a bit more than any other recipe

I've made. Of course, sadly, he LOVES these cookies and the vanilla is what

is making them taste so yummy, since we can't use honey either. Pretty

frustrating, but if I can just pinpoint what the problem is, we can solve

it. I just hate when I don't know. For now, cutting vanilla out of all

recipes for a week and going to see what I can tell from that.

Sure makes no-fenol tempting. Still wavering there... I'm so afraid to rock

the boat. He's doing so well most of the time, just don't know...

Yes, which is why Luke gets a lot of garlic! Poor kid! He'd sure love some

cinnamon or nutmeg in some of these recipes, too.

,

I think I found something!! Rather lengthy and scientific, but I skimmed it

and coped one paragraph for you.

It was at http://www.newtreatments.org/Sulfur/ga/252

Following the Feingold diet plan will benefit these kids by exclusion

of foods known to include phenols. Salicylates, dyes, sodium

benzoate, BHA, BHT, FD & C yellow dye #5 (tartrazine), vanillin,

eugenol are all phenolic compounds.

My allergytechnician I e-mailed is no longer there.

Hope this helps,

Blessings,

Kathy and ,

The salicylate value on vanilla essence liquid is .01 mg/serving size of 1 tsp

: cinnamon is .30/1tsp.

vs.

zucchini is .79 mg/ serving of 1/2 cup.

This is according to the allergytechnician chart.

Well, that is minimal... I'm so confused.

I just read that long article. It is very informative but depressing,

somewhat, and probably moreso because I'm reading it when I'm about to drop

off asleep.

I feel like, right now, I'll never get a handle on this or get it all right

for him. But that is when I have to trust the Lord to show me what to do

next, what is right.

Better get this stuff out of the oven and go to BED,

Thanks for your help,

Hi ,

Has there been any change recently in Luke's bm's or is it just

behavioural? You've been using lots of garlic etc. natural

antimicrobials?
