Guest guest
I have had bad leg cramps for years and they wake me up at night and I have to get up and walk around to get rid of it. The next day, my leg or foot is still sore from the cramp. My doctor prescribed Quinine capsules for me to take before going to bed. Don't wait until you get the cramp, just take it on a regular basis. I don't take them everyday, but go through spells of getting cramps. I also take B12 shots once a month and the week that my shot is due, I start getting lots of cramps. They go away after the shot. ita
Guest guest
Hello All... Are you currently eliminating all dairy products from your diet as well? A lack of calcium in your diet may be contributing to your leg cramps. Perhaps a GF calcium supplement might be a good thing to try...easy and good for you, too! Take care... Guest guest
Hello All... Just wanted to add that Jana's suggestion is a very good one as well, since your potassium levels can adversely effect your muscles as well as your energy level. Take care.. Guest guest
Stormy I know from years of having these you need to do two main things. My daughter also started having the same pains and so did my neighbours and we all know this has helped. Most cramps and Charlie horses, as we call them, arebecause you are running low. So I took my specialist advise and we eat a banana before bed almost every night. It works for us so hope that will help you too Jana Church in cold snowy Nova Scotia

Guest guest
Some leg cramps can be caused by low potassium levels. Bananas are rich in potassium…try eating a banana (or two) before bed. Or you could always try a potassium supplement, if you can find one.

Potassium supplements are usually by RX only and should require careful monitoring. It very difficult to OD on potassium from food, but the supplements are several orders of magnitude greater in strength and too much potassium can kill you pretty quickly as it affects your heart function. Over the last couple months I've started having the leg/cramps sometimes, too. I was able to pinpoint to the nights that I didn't have my bedtime cocoa - a cup (or two!) of Cadbury Drinking chocolate in milk has been my bedtime habit for about 15 years. I don't tend to drink much milk during the day, so the 12 to 18 ounces I have at night are a major portion of my calcium intake.
Guest guest
My doctor also prescribed quinine, but before I tried the quinine I tried having a banana every day and that worked wonders without dosing myself. I just got sick of having to take another pill to solve my problems. Guest guest
My doctor prescribed Quinine capsules and I took them for maybe 5 years until I had spinal surgeries to redesign my spine the right way and had fusions where nothing else would work. I cannot do milk products but do try to get calcium and also eat bananas a couple times a week.I seldom get the cramps now and my surgeries were 30 years ago. Guest guest
Hi Stormy, I am in menopause, and after over a year without, I had a small cycle. It was not too bad, but I had constant cramping in my legs and found that the only way I could sleep was with my legs elevated on pillows, rather high and flat on my back, which I never sleep on my back, so I ended up on the couch. I take lots of pain meds, and they did not help much. If it had lasted much longer, I might have to try more but just wanted to let you know that it may very well be related to your monthly cycle. Good luck. Thanks, MicheleCFS/FMS/Arthritis ----- Original Message ----- From: stormykjq Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 9:45 AM Does anyone have any help to give regarding terrible leg cramps? I've been told that they aren't uncommon for CD/DH people. I just had my blood tests and they came back as 'levels undetectable' for Gliaden and Endomysials, which my MD tells me is great. No outbreaks recently either, just these god-awful toe/foot/leg cramps at night that literally have me leaping out of bed to 'walk em off'. I'd rather try homeopathic helps (minerals, vitamins, heat, that sort of thing) before going the Rx route. For the ladies; if you have this problem, have you noted whether it's worse around your period? I'm still trying to figure that out. Thanks everyone!Stormy
