Guest guest
" For five days all he had was chicken, jello once and white grape juice. During those five days Kenzie's behavior didn't change. He is always somewhat hyper and pinches alot. He gets excited and likes to bounce on the bed especially when he's watching videos. So even though I think phenols are a problem, his behavior didn't change those five days without any. " Grape juice is high in phenols. ----------- " He has responded before with the red ears and giddy behavior. He now eats chicken, meat sauce with burger, tomato juice and carrots, pineapple juice (watered down), lots of bananas and applesauce. " Tomatoes and apples (except golden delicious) are high in phenols. So, unless you are making the applesauce with golden delcious apples, he is stil getting a lot of phenols. Maybe you could try getting a No Fenol into him before each time he eats since his meals consist of foods that are high in phenols. Maybe he also needs a broad spectrum enzyme that will help break down the rest of the foods he eats. Like H-NZyme Prime or one of the Thropps or Kirkman's enzymes. DF might be able to give us some advice on a good broad spectrum enzyme. --------------- " I'm concerned because I think the probiotic was causing a problem so I cut that out but have nothing to fight yeast. " Was the probiotic actually causing a problem or was he going through die off from the probiotic pushing out the bad guys? Some activated charcoal might help with the die off, if you could manage to get it in him. ---------------------- " Forget veggies. " Have you tried mixing a tsp to a TBL of pureed veggies into his tomato sauce that he eats with his burgers? You could try zucchini, yellow squash... What about pureeing some veggies and adding 1 tsp-1 TBL to each of his hamburger patties before you cook them? It might not be a LOT of veggies, but over the course of a day, you might be able to get 1/4 of a cup into him and it would at least be a start. Guest guest
Penny, Has he been tested for clostridia? Has he ever taken Flagyl? That helps tremendously for kids with bacteria problems. My daughter has had that issue for years. We are getting ready to do 2 weeks on Flagyl and I am hoping along with the diet it will really kick in on the bacteria. Just a thought. I feel for you..........I have dealt with a lot of your same issues for years. Kathy Abby's mom SCD since 2-21-04 Penny is so confused and lost...help > My head is spinning. All this talk of phenols and salicylates. I'm sure Kenzie has a problem with them. He does with everything. On 2/22 I went back to the intro after being SCD five months. Guest guest
Penny I know where you are at! Sam reacted to a tiny bit of acorn squash; he's just coming off it now - 2 weeks later! It is really frustrating. I agree with Jody, try the No Phenol before those high phenol foods. Since he refuses so many foods it would be really difficult to cut out more stuff. Check out this salicylate list....http://users.bigpond.net.au/allergydietitian/fi/salicylates-list.html It's the easiest to understand for me so far. Since he is self-limiting so many foods, I would urge you to eliminate as many smelly, artificialy colored and flavored non food items in the house as you can. Sam uses Tom's of Maine fennel toothpaste. It's not SCD legal, but Elaine says as long as you don't swallow it it's ok. It tastes like liquorice, no artificials or preservatives. We also use Tom's of Maine honeysuckle baby shampoo and Dove soap without frangrance. Watch out for " unsented " items, they still sometimes list " frangrance " in the ingredients. Could he have seasonal allergies? Sam's behavior goes all out of whack when his are acting up. He can swallow the small Claritin now. Probably no SCD legal, but it's better than benadryl or something else like it. It could be other allergies, like mold or dust. I know that it is alot to think about! But if you don't see any improvement in his diet, it could be environmental and no amount of diet change will help that. Take it slow; don't try to do everything at once. Guest guest
Penny, Maybe you could puree a dark veggie and then cook the meat in it as you make it to go into his sauce. Then also puree something like peeled zucchini and add it into the sauce itself. What about the idea of juicing some veggies and using a medicine dropper to get him to drink it? Guest guest
Penny, I am making the meatballs suggested by . They are great. I just plop a tablespoon full on the parchment in rows then bake. Easy and freeze well! I even made them with the substitute for egg (with the gelatin listed on pecanbread) and it was fine. I cook the vegies first, which I think she had said, not sure there, and use string beans. 1 lb ground beef 1 lb ground pork 1 cup pureed vegs (I do half carrot/half green bean) 2 eggs Roll and bake on parchment paper at 350 for 30 mins. I also make burger patties out of the same stuff, but the kids prefer the balls. in NC, USA I hope this works for you. I also am at 75% water 25% grape juice and that made a big difference. It might not be a LOT of veggies, but over the course of a day, you might be able to get 1/4 of a cup into him and it would at least be a start. Guest guest
That sounds good. What would be the best veggies to start with for juicing? I did that once with carrots. Thanks Penny Re: Penny is so confused and lost...help Penny, Maybe you could puree a dark veggie and then cook the meat in it as you make it to go into his sauce. Then also puree something like peeled zucchini and add it into the sauce itself. What about the idea of juicing some veggies and using a medicine dropper to get him to drink it? Guest guest
I don't see why not. I put some salt in the mix. Blessings, Doreen Re: Penny is so confused and lost...help " For five days all he had was chicken, jello once and white grape juice. During those five days Kenzie's behavior didn't change. He is always somewhat hyper and pinches alot. He gets excited and likes to bounce on the bed especially when he's watching videos. So even though I think phenols are a problem, his behavior didn't change those five days without any. He now eats chicken, meat sauce with burger, tomato juice and carrots, pineapple juice (watered down), lots of bananas and applesauce. Guest guest
Penny, If he is salicylate sensitive it may be the ketchup. Try taking out all tomatoes for awhile too. The clostridia is a bacteria (different from yeast) and you have to kill it with an antibiotic or I guess a natural alternative. ( I think Biocidin) My daughter absolutely craves ketchup, spaghetti and anything tomato........I had to go ahead and remove it but she's doing o.k. eating the burger without it. If you boil your fruits and put extra water you can use that for juice as well. I didn't think Abby would like it but she really does. Take care. Guest guest
I know how you feel, I don't see massive miraculous progress in yet either. I am taking great pleasure in the fact that he is eating lots of food of much better quality and variety, that he is sleeping mostly all night without 2-3 hours of the giggles at three in the morning, that he no longer wets the bed, and that he has beautiful little trophy poops. BUT still not a word, and he used to have a fair amount of language when he was three. I am hoping that starting the yoghurt will maybe do something, and we are testing for clostridia. I too get jealous at all the success stories and I have to admit I don't even read most of them. I usually try to remind myself that the tremendous stress from seeing my son eat no protien and nothing but crap is gone, and that alone is worth the effort. I keep having dreams that he just starts talking in sentences - maybe that is the way it will happen for us! Hang in there - you are not alone! Alice. Guest guest
Actually I just started the meat sauce after a long break yesterday. I use chicken or burger and 's tomato juice, carrots, onions. Do you think that's a problem? Thanks Penny Re: Penny is so confused and lost...help > > > " For five days all he had was chicken, jello once and white grape > juice. Guest guest
Not if you have already taken it out and then tested it back in and he was alright with it. Guest guest
Hi Penny, I'd have posted this sooner but my server was down this week (two late spring snowstorms) and I'm playing catch up with e-mails. Here is my experience for what it is worth. When I started SCD I saw fantastic results immediately within hours I had total relief from just awful gut pains and cramps. How severe? If SCD hadn't worked I would have been readmitted to the ER the following day and back in the hospital for another run of IV feeding with steroids and fluids. Unfortunately when I introduced yogurt I mistakenly used a starter that had bifidum bacteria. After months using it I started having problems and some detective work led me to the fine print on the yogurt starter. I stopped it immediately. At that point I had lost all the groundwork I had in the past 17 months on SCD. I was having D and bleeding again. But from my year of being symptom free I knew that if given time SCD would work. I went to a very basic diet for months. I made little bits of progress but it was extremely slow. This time around i was unable to tolerate even the probiotics I had used while using the yogurt. Every month I would try the yogurt and had immediate bad reactions. It was at about the 5th or 6th month after restarting and being on an a basic diet that I could finally tolerate yogurt. Once I did my progress speeded up exponentially. But it was extremely slow and progress seemed far less dramatic than what it had been before. It took boatloads of patience but it did happen. My point is that the chelation may have thrown his gut bacteria out of whack just as the bifidum yogurt did for me. You write that you have seen progress " a little less " in the fog " & " They are more formed and much less of them so I'm assuming that absorption is taking place. " So maybe you just need to hold out a little longer while the gut balance is restoring itself and with absorption restoring he should be able to start getting vitamins and minerals from his foods. The raw fruits and vegetables would likely set him back at this point. From what you are listing he really is doing pretty good. Sue (from Pickering) has said that her improvements came in bursts. It is really great that he is having formed stool so quickly after restaring the diet you have only been on it for less than a month. Have you tried adding a few pureed vegetables in the tomato sauce? Some pureed green beans and carrots blended together and then mixed in with the tomato sauce. Guest guest
Sheila: Thanks for your response. It really helps knowing that for some people it just takes a long time. It's really helpful to get an adult's perspective on what's happening. I did give him some meat sauce the other night with tomato juice, burger, onions and way too many carrots. I should have known better. It backfired on me and he had loose stools. The next night I made the sauce with chicken (he's eaten it this way before) and I put in just a little pureed carrot and zucchini. He wouldn't even try it. He eats a lot of protein. He'll eat around four boneless chicken breast a day. Sometimes I worry about too much protein. He's living off chicken, bananas and watered down pineapple juice. Thanks again, Penny Re: Penny is so confused and lost...help Hi Penny, I'd have posted this sooner but my server was down this week (two late spring snowstorms) and I'm playing catch up with e-mails. Guest guest
Hi Penny, As long as he is eating enough banana and pineapple juice, it doesn't matter so much if he eats lots of chicken. Just make sure he is getting enough carbs. How many bananas per day? I forget. ate 3 per day for the first several months!
