Guest guest
Amy, if anyone can get together for a group- wide "pull" for you and your family, it is the folks in this group. Love to each of you from me, and highest hopes en route. Keep on posting to us, please. n, who is glad that you chose to tell us all this--this, too, is part of your life. . . Bad News Hi all, I have to tell people I know would listen and understand. I got some really bad news today from my neuro who happens to be my dad's doctor too. My dad has been having these problems for a while with balance and muscles twitching. So he was referred to my neuro by his general doctor and she's sent him for an MRI and other tests. Well, I had an appointment with her today and I knew if I needled her enough she would tell me what was wrong with my dad. I've had this doctor for 4 years and we are very open with each other so don't take this as she's speaking out of turn. My dad and my family do not feel angry at her for what she told me today. But my dad has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig's Disease. She gives him 5 to 6 years. My poor mom, who just found out her sister is dying now has to deal with this too. It's just so awful and menacing. My MS became rvery small when she told me this. I feel so bad. I'm sorry to burden everyone but we sure could use some prayers. We need all the good thoughts we can get. Amy Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Sign up for FanHouse Fantasy Football today. Guest guest
Dear Amy:I am SO sorry to hear this news. How old is your father? Thankfully the doctor told you! I'm sure you have researched ALS already but I just did a little research of my own to educate ME. I saw this at:http://www.medicinenet.com/amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis/article.htmWhile there is no cure for ALS or a proven therapy that will prevent or reverse the course of the disorder, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved riluzole (RILUTEK), the first drug that has been shown to prolong the survival of ALS patients. Patients may also receive supportive treatments that address the symptoms of the disease. For further information, please visit the following site: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (http://www.alsa.org/) ALSA National Office 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150 Calabasas Hills, CA 91301 I will most certainly add your father and your family to my prayers. What else can I do for you, my friend?loveSharonhttp://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/MSersHEALTH/This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear the bad news! I wish there were words that could change it, but there really isn't is it. Just know that this group will allways be there for you when you need to talk. Can I recommend a book? If not, just ignore the following... A really touching book written by a woman with ALS during her last years is " Rowing without oars: A memoir of living and dying " by Ulla-Carin Lindquist. It's about her thoughts and feelings during this process, and the ways she find to cope. The title (the book is originally in Swedish, but translated to English), is an allusion to the Swedish folksong " Vem kan segla förutan vind " (who can sail without wind), the entire lyrics (in English translation) is: " Who can sail without winds? Who can row without oars? Who can say goodbye to their love, without shedding tears? I can sail without wind. I can row without oars. But I can't say goodbye to my love without shedding tears " Amazon has the book in paperback, here: http://www.amazon.com/Rowing-Without-Oars-Memoir- Living/dp/0143038672/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1216449218 & sr=8-5 But I am guessing you could get it through your library as well. love /Reb PS. If you want to listen to the song, it's on youtube: > > Hi all, > I have to tell people I know would listen and understand.
