We are on day 8.I think we found a sensitivity to phenols.

We started off with the intro diet for 3 days. Have been adding

legals in slowly. Tryed the grape juice jello made with straight

grape juice not cut with water. We had this toward eve. and both of

us were up all night.

I made applesauce with golden delicious apples (concerned about

phenols) and he said yuck too sweet. Made granny smith applesauce

and gave some this morning. He has been slightly hyper and has some

smelly gas (has horrible gas pre-scd not since starting).

I guess my ? is to phenol/ salic. people. We have no rash or red

ears. We have in the last few days eaten some green beans , banana,

and then the applesauce. I am on day 2 of applesauce but only day 1

of the granny smith one. Should I give him more to see if this is

the culprit or will I not be able to tell since he had green beans &

ban. yesterday? No green beans today and only 1/2 banana.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed. sorry...

Blessings,

-Doreen,

It's really impossible to know for " sure " until you take him off

salicylates completely, and then add them back to test. I have had

mine tested for phenols in apples, and tomatoes using

Provocation/Neutralization technique, but that's alot of trouble,

and may or may not be definitive.

And since you are in the middle of the hardest part of the program,

you probably don't want to get involved in some testing, so let me

share some things that we've been doing to keep the phenols at bay.

We have found our situation hard but not unbearable (except maybe

for day 1 & 2), but not because of the reaction to phenols, I think

its more the release of toxins.

We eat only pears (must be peeled and baked/cooked) or bananas for

fruits/sweets, and try to keep them to a reasonable amount. Juices

are too concentrated, and so are the jellos made from them.

We did only one day of intro, skipped to stage 1 so we could have

green beans, spinach and zuchini (must be peeled). Next day we went

to stage 2 to get more variety. I think we'll stay here for awhile.

Cashew butter is a big hit...tastes like frosting. My most

sensitive can't eat any other kind of nut at this time, I don't know

why, but they give him headaches.

It hasn't been perfect, the first couple of days has been really

hard on their body. I just keep trying to feed them alot of protein

and fat so they feel satisfied, and I let them rest when tired.

Sleep patterns are off, but they have been off before diet.

Magnesium Citrate is a very good supplement, but try to get a legal

one. We are also taking the multivitamins and other supplements.

I don't know if they help or not.

Olive oil aggravates phenolic sensitives, so does coconut oil.

Eggs do cause problems with my oldest, and I never would have known

unless I hadn't eliminated them after a positive allergy test result.

Kathy,

I don't know what to do right now.

We have been eating basically, chick, beef, very little pork and turkey, a lot

of pureed carrots 2x a day with no problems(tastes like candy) green beans,

eggs, now watered down to grape juice 3/4 water 1/4 juiceand limited to one

glass per day earlier in day, applesauce added yesterday golden delic (too

sweet), applesauce today granny smith. Olive oil is the only oil I have used. :(

He had dark circles under his eyes before diet and up until about day 3 or so.

They slightly cam back last night before bed. Had some slight today too.

We had some gold delic.applesauce with breakfast, meatballs fried in olive oil

with some green beans yesterday for lunch and then he wanted more green beans

with dinner with applesauce.

He had some 3 tsp. of granny smith applesauce on breakfast this morn.

I have zucchini in frig. waiting to try, pearsauce and spinach already to be

tryed.

Should I stop the applesauce for now?

Do a one day on the intro again before introducing a new food? Maybe

cumulative effect even though all escept the granny smith is negligible or low?

You mentioned zucchini, I thought that was high in phenols?

He is also believed to be hypoglycemic. Has been on legal kirkman supplements

(not magnesium citrate), magnesium with melatonin. No probiotics or enzymes for

now. Thought was to see the true food culprits.

Usually pre-scd when bad gas then bad behavior too! Is this a toxin being

released?

Thank you for your thoughts,

Doreen,

I have alot of experience with avoiding salicylates, but little

experience with this diet, so I'm learning as I go but, I'll do the

best I can with your questions. I agree with the person who

mentioned that this is really worth a try when a child has many

sensitivities, like mine and perhaps yours too.

Also, I hope you are being good to yourself too, maybe a hot bath or

a nice cup of tea. :o)

Great! I'd stop the grape juice, and if possible use another oil,

butter, or possibly cook with strained animal fat (but only allittle

bit), instead of olive oil. Watch coconut oil also, it is extremely

high in phenols.

So do my kids, they are also very tired, but with some bursts of

high energy which fizzle out irradically.

I'd remove the applesauce and replace it with pearsauce or easier

just baked pears. Green beans seem OK, zuchini is in there for

variety, but use it sparingly and please peel, it better yet maybe

you'd rather go for yellow squash instead.

Spinach is good.

> Should I stop the applesauce for now?

Yes, I would.

Grapes and oil were high.

Yes, but it is still acceptable without skin in small amounts.

Great. What other supplements?

We were on Kirkman supplements two weeks ago, and found that they

created some bad behavior, so stopped, and so did the bad behavior,

it is possilbe this was die off, but I think it might have been the

aspergillus base (a mold).

> Usually pre-scd when bad gas then bad behavior too! Is this a

toxin being released?

I haven't figured it out, but I will say that last year when we were

on Flaygl, then Nystatin, and then Culturelle, we did not get any

hyperactivity, but mostly dark circles, and fatigue. I'll tell you

what I'm getting with this experience that I have never see before,

the ravenous appetite, and anxiety that there may not be enough to

eat. I am getting some off behavior (probably to much zuchini, or

pears, or maybe blood sugar swings), but it is manageable because it

doesn't go on and on.

If you pull the phenols out early on, they may be released pretty

quickly, but maybe you could give your child an Epsom Salt bath and

water to drink to help it along.

I think it is great that is agreeing to eat all these

wonderful homemade foods you are preparing.
