Guest guest
Diane, We have had some kids start the way you are describing, but many of those parents eventually went back and started over with the intro diet. It seems that we really do see the quickest progress with those kids who start with the intro diet and add foods slowly and allow the gut time to heal. But removing all of the starches is the most important step. Having constipation is a sign of GI problems. Not all kids have D., but C. is not " normal " either. If you are looking for a calcium/magnesium supplement, there is a list of legal supplements on pecanbread.com, but if you are planning to give him cheese or yogurt, I don't think you will need one. Liquid milk is not the only source. Cheese and yogurt have lots of calcium too. Almonds are very high in magnesium. So, if he is eating baked goods from almonds, I wouldn't be concerned with his magnesium intake. I don't know about making yogurt in the crockpot. I completely depends on whether your crockpot has a setting that will keep the temperature at the right level. To know if the temperature is right, you just need to buy a candy thermometer (available at WalMart or any store that sells cookware). To make the homemade yogurt taste more like the store-bought type, you will need to add some cooked fruit and lots of honey at first. Store-bought yogurt is loaded with sugar and/or corn syrup to make it taste so sweet. Over time, you can gradually reduce the amount of honey you put in it and he will get used to eating it less sweet. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Diane, I too am new to the SCD diet (Day 7). I read the book about 2 times and was overwhelmed! Then I let a little time pass, and read about 300 of the past postings and came up with the theory that what is suggested as the Intro diet then the stages is the best way. Why?? Because I read about so many moms who had started off jumping right into muffins or such and only months later had to go back to the intro diet. My son is a picky eater but when he realized this is all he is going to get he ate it. The chicken egg pancakes after the intro diet are great. Knowing what you are feeling right now you may e-mail me anytime as again I am right there in the beginning. Oh, a food log which is suggested I find is definitely a must! Blessings, Doreen scd 7 days 12, asd, scd 7 days Just Starting Out Clear DayI am JUST starting out on this diet for my son, and am wondering . .. .is it okay if I simply start with the muffins, and try to sneak veggies and meats into them? I baked some muffins yesterday with the almond flour (although they sunk in the middle and still don't hold together too well---will take some practice, I'm sure), and he ate them for breakfast today. i was so glad!! There is NO WAY he will eat chicken, carrots, soup, anything like that. I know others have said they held out and their child simply did not eat for a few days until they finally succummed to the pressure and ATE what they were given. Do you think as long as he isn't getting sugar, starch, grain, etc. then he should essentially be all right this way? he does not have loose stools at all--in fact, he is very constipated, usually. I am a bit overwhelmed and confused at this point. I have also taken milk away starting today---how on earth do I replace his calcium/magnesium? I do have tablets he has been taking in his yogurt, but it's not the " legal " yogurt, so now what? I don't have the yogurt maker yet, and am considering getting this. Has anyone made the yogurt in a crock pot like it said in the book? I just don't know how I would know the temperature for sure, and if I am doing it right!!! If it tastes horrible, he won't eat it, anyway, but at least I could bake with it????? Still, where will the calcium come from? thanks--sorry I'm over loading on questions. full of confusion and worry . .. . ~diane ------ http://USFamily.Net/info - Unlimited Internet - From $8.99/mo! ------
Guest guest
Diane I am a little reluctant to respond as we have not followed the intro and stages. My son had what I would call variable soft stools in the begining. But I did what you are doing now and that is pull out the illegals and find things that he would eat with in the full menu. In the beginning it is quite confusing and I cook for seven so there was enough work just trying to cook and keep everyone :-) happy. Later on when I became more accustomed to my new culture of food I started to modify. I have read that nuts have calcium and mag. so I would not worry about getting enough at this point. If you start making Yogurt and eating cheese he will also get calcium that wayas well. We have now been doing the diet for 9 months and it is a miracle watching all my childrens food choices change. They are all so healthy and doing well. The main thing- Don't worry! look at this wonderful healthy food that you are giving to your son and know that he will blossom with such good nutrition and down the road when cooking and his food sence has changed you could try the intro. Good luck to you (mom to 7 ASD SCD 9 mths) P.S. Can't help with the muffins as mine are variable as well ;-D lyle and diane vrana wrote: >Clear DayI am JUST starting out on this diet for my son, and am wondering . . ..is it okay if I simply start with the muffins, and try to sneak veggies and meats into them? Guest guest
If you want to start with nut products that is okay, but once your son expands his food choices and the " extreme hunger " begins then go back to the intro and eliminate the nut products for a while, maybe a few weeks, while slowly adding cooked fruit and veggies. Then add the something like one cashew butter muffin, wait a day, have another muffin, wait a day, until you are sure he can tolerate them. Don't go too overboard on the nut products all at once. We added everything way too fast and lost progress and his poops went downhill. Regarding the calcium/magnesium, I make bananna and egg pancakes and mix 's mineral capsules into the batter before cooking. Minerals are not affected by heat so you can bake with them no problem.
