Guest guest
Hi Francis, Welcome to the group. I think you may be the first member from Ireland! I am very sorry you have been diagnosed with IgAN, especially at such a young age. I must urge you to refrain from making any dietary changes until you discuss it with your Nephrologist. Renal diets need to be highly tailored according to your particular laboratory results. A couple of general comments about a vegetarian diet though: First, the source of protein (vegetable vs. animal protein) is really of little consequence. Protein regardless of the source is hard on your kidneys. For that reason, when my Nephrologist started me on my renal diet, I was actually advised that because animal protein has all the essential amino acids, and it is necessary to mix proteins on a vegetarian diet to get them, you would actually have a higher protein intake with a vegetarian diet, and was therefore advised that the 3 ounces of protein I was allowed every day should come from animal protein. Also, if your potassium levels are high, you may need to avoid many high potassium fruits and veggies which could be hard on a vegetarian diet. Just check with your doctor first oK? I am not a meat lover, and would by nature be happy being a vegetarian, but I follow the advise of my Nephrologist. Hope this helps, and again, a warm welcome to the group! By the way, it is worth mentioning for all the new members that if you have not yet done so, you may want to look at our sister site www.igan.ca which has a wealth of information on IgAN. That site was put up by our founder Pierre, and he has done a fantastic job in presenting the information in a most informative way from a patient's perspective. Guest guest
Hello Francis, Welcome aboard. I did the same thing about setting back for a while. The doc said not to worry so I didn't. It wasn't until I did a little research did I realize it did deserve an occasional worry. The odds are in our favor though. I've read some of the replies regarding going totally vegetarian. Have they changed your opinion yet?
