I have to agree with everything that was said below. The only other

thing I did differently was coffee. I tried decaf at first and

couldn't take the withdrawal from it, so I did 1/2 and 1/2 for a while

and then 3/4 decaf. - 1/4 caf. until I eventually went to decaf. It's

over a year now, and chose to go back to Maxwell House Lite, which is

1/2. I have never really strayed from this WOL, because I never want

to go through my first month again.

Please tell her that this is what happens to almost everyone. I

hope she sticks with it. It's the first diet I have ever been

successful with. (there were many before this) I have lost approx. 57

lbs. and feel great.

Hi Simmie! Maybe it is the yeast being killed off. It caused a lot of

itching and other aches for me.

Simmie,

I do almost exactly what your friend is in right now when I am on 10-15

carbs a day. After the first week I up my carbs just a little with a salad

or something like that, I eat a few more snacks and MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR ME,

drink even more water. I am soooo sensitive with my fibro and chronic

fatique the first week of induction can be nothing but work and rest and

water, water, water. The light is at the end of the tunnel, I promise. She

will feel 100 times better soon, I know I did.

Jeana, You still lurking? Jump in anytime.....I'm looking for you!

Great for her bf!!!! Too bad she is not a meat eater, I had a friend who

dropped atkins cause she was not a meat eater either, guess i cud see where it

wud be a problem although other people have adapted. My friend loves veggies.

Maybe ur friend wud be happier with an adapted lower or lowest carb, like maybe

eating some whole wheat bread and brown rice with chicken stir fry, basically

just ditching the sugar, starches and refined foods? That is the type of diet I

wud feed my kid, if i had one!

ROFL I read your email to her and when I read the " ....all those juicy

steaks, bacon, etc. " she just went " ohhhh yuckkkkkk! " She is not a big

meat eater -- she does like cheese and the likes for protein, tho. She

DOES eat meat, just isn't all that crazy about it and doesn't like the high

fat end of protein.

Now.....she lives in a household with her partner and his two kids. She

just tickles me when she says about them " They don't consider it a meal

unless something has died! " The men are definitely like me -- they love

the meat and love the fat.

Now here's something really neat -- her partner was recently diagnosed with

diabetes and it was totally out of control, with the meds not helping to

reduce the sugar level. They switched his meds a couple of time, with no

positive outcome. His blood sugar, since being on Atkins, has gone from

300 down to 120. Is that wonderful or what? Of course she had to also get

him to drink something other than regular Pepsi's, but my goodness what a

wonderful thing for him.

When I start induction, I always go through a headache for a week or so and I also have joint pain and my body feels real heavy (not fat, but laden down) for a while. Getting into ketosis is very hard on my body, but tell your friend to get ready for a real high once she gets there. And, yes, eight lbs. is a lot, but not all that unusual. If I were her, I would be taking potassium and a lot of other supplements and trying to hang in there for a few more days or even another week. Potassium really helped me last time, it was Joya who told meit would help with the bone crushing tiredness and it did. Hope this helps.

Again, help for a friend who is doing Atkins, and if she can't find a resolution to this, may wind up not staying on it.She is on Day 5 of Induction and is feeling HORRIBLE. Nah, she is anything but a quitter -- in fact she'd put most of us to shame

-- she's just trying to figure out why this is happening, and if she is

going to feel like this for the entire time she's on the diet, then I would

tell her to find another diet. She is NOT a complainer at all, so for her

to have to take the morphine for pain means that there has been something

going on since starting Atkins......it's just a matter of figuring out

*what* and what's caused it.

well now that you mention chrons disease.. she should be following atkins

" yeast " version of the diet in the begining.. dairy isnt good for chrons..

also chrons will get worse before it gets better.. it seems to try and force

you to eat badly.. my one friend tried to eat right and she swore her

insides were screaming at her and went back to eating junk.. the bad things

put up a fight when you start to starve them from the sugar.. she just has

to hang in there and get thru the rough spots.. also does she take B-6??

that will help with carpal tunnel.. i am glad tho that her partner is

doing better this is the way to eat for both of them she just might have to

struggle a bit more.. about a month away from all the bad foods her chrons

should settle down and she can add back dairy and the like right now she

should stick to meat/fish/chicken/veggies and salads

OTOH....It may have NOTHING to do with the diet...a patient has the *right*

to more than one disease...and the symptoms are broad enough that it could

be any number of problems not related to the diet...just coincidental that

they occurred at the same time. Keep in touch with her doc.
