My doc recommended the micronized DHEA, saying is was more readily usable and absorbable and higher potency - I think I saw a slight difference with the microized, but the one from the health food store was okay too. Getting tested is a good idea, but you can also just take it and see how you do on it..my doc has the philosophy that if it helps, and has no androginizing affects (acne, hair loss, facial hair)it's okay to try and see what it does for you...I was giving it to one of my sons when he was tested for adrenal fatigue and although his DHEA came back very high and the cortisol very low, the doctor was not alarmed that I was giving it to him, or that his DHEA was high...he said the body itself sometimes makes addtional DHEA in a response to/compensation for the adrenals not making enough cortisol (I did stop giving him the DHEA tho)...anyway...when I was intitially tested, I was low, but was on it for 8 years - 50mgs - a high dose for a woman (usually not to exceed 25mgs) and later I was high normal and then went over the range, but the doc said as long as it was working to keep using it. Neither of my holistic docs feel 7-keto is something people should use instead of DHEA...I know poeple take it feeling it's not as likely to cause masculinizing effects, but my docs prefer DHEA and if you can't take it say that you probably do not need 7-keto DHEA either. Yes, DHEA can be purchased at WalMart or any other drugstore. Some docs feel you should take as little as possible, but if you are under a lot of stress, taking 25 mg. is not bad. And it's not a bad idea to get it tested if you can afford the labs. But even if you can't do labs, it's not a bad idea since it falls steadily after age 25 or so. (The only exception would be someone who produces very little cortisol, and thus would have a high DHEA.) I take mine via a gel, and right now, I also have a lozenge with the gel since mine got so low. Janie
Guest guest
Thanks Janie, I don't want to do too many things at once. I have just started adrenal (nutri-meds) so I'll probably wait to start DHEA. Although I really expected a jolt with the adrenal, I didn't really feel anything. Started 1/4 tab. I jsut feel so frustrated wanting to feel better, knowing (hopefully) it will come, but not knowing exactly which way to turn. I have started to feel a bit more energy since starting Armour in Dec....I am just not a very patient person. Kat > > Janie, thanks for posting the article on DHEA. Guest guest
I didnt' feel a jolt on the adrenal.. but did feel better.. it can sneak up on you...if you are still doing okay... as not feeling really antsy or anything... add another quarter tab about 3 hours after the first.... Well.... I'm the believer in multi-dosing.. you may choose to take the 1/2 tab at one time....
