Guest guest
Hello everyone. My name is Nikki and I am raising my grandson. He will be three months old in a week. He was just diagnosed with plagio and torticollis. He also has other health concerns. We have just started physio and he will be getting visits from our local child development center. I am new to all of this and hoping to connect with others experiencing the same things. So far I am just learning different ways of holding and moving him. is a big boy and very determined to stay on his right side. If anyone has ideas that may help I am open to all suggestions. Also, I am wondering which children benefit more from the helmets and when they are used in treatment. Thanks to the group, and good luck on our common journey. Guest guest
Hi Nikki & welcome to our group! Glad you found us. Repositioning a plagio baby can be quite challenging alone, but with torticollis involved, it's even more of a challenge!! We have a ton of helpful 'REPOSITIONING TIPS/IDEAS' in both our group FILES & LINKS sections. We have many product links that might be of help as well. I'm sure Christie will reply w/her repo tips, she's our resident repo guru All plagio babies can benefit from a helmet for correction. The younger in age a baby begins a helmet, the better and faster the correction will be. Babies head grow the fastest & most in the first 12 mos of their life, esp age 6 mos and younger. I chked our DATABASE for British Columbia helmet/band providers and found this IF and/or WHEN you may be interested in pursuing a helmet for your grandson. There is a provider in BC and here's his info: Canada - British Columbia Local Helmet Valley Orthocare Ltd., #118-12414-82nd Avenue, Surrey, BC V3W 3E9, Canada Alan H. (604) 597-4784, orthocare@... Company Representative's Email Good luck, pls keep us posted on his progress! Debbie MI > Hello everyone. My name is Nikki and I am raising my grandson. He > will be three months old in a week. Guest guest
Hello Nikki! Welcome to the group! I hope we can be a source of support and information to you regarding your grandson's plagiocephaly. I noticed that you said your grandson has tort. Torticollis makes aggressive repositioning almost impossible - it can be incredibly difficult to get them to keep their head turned off of the flat area! Usually repo efforts aren't successful until the tort is resolved, which can take months. If you find that you are unable to position his head, I would recommend keeping all your efforts toward keeping him up off his head entirely as much as possible during the daytime. At nighttime, you might have some luck with sewing a wedge or bag or rice to the back of one side of his pjs in an effort to tip him up off of his flat area. You could also try a side sleep positioner, or a custom piece of memory foam under the head. There are a lot of repo products you could look through in the LINKS/REPO AND TUMMY TIME/REPO PRODUCTS to purchase, or maybe give you some ideas for homemade products. There are also a couple of foam headrest-type ideas from our members in the FILES/REPO HEADQUARTERS/REPO PHOTOS folder... if you get a chance, check them out to see if those ideas might work for you as well! Because your grandson has tort, and repo may be difficult, it may benefit you to start finding out about what the timeline/process would be to get a referral to a specialist for evaluation, etc. You could also give the facility a call that Debbie gave you in her reply, and get some initial questions answered about how to go about getting into a helmet, efficacy of treatment in regards to age of the baby, etc. Your grandson is so young, that you will have time to find out about these options at your leisure while you are addressing his other health concerns as well. Would you let us know how things are going with your grandson, and let me know if I can be of any help with repo? Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy)_ > Hello everyone. Guest guest
Hi Nikki, Welcome to the group. I see Debbie and Christie gave you some hints on repoing and also explained how difficult it can be, especially in a baby w/tort! I wish you the best of luck. How would you rate his severity? There are severity assessments in our links section. I think it would be beneficial to you to get a referral to a specialist in the meantime. It could take weeks or months to get in and if you are happy wiht the repo resutls you could always cancel it. All babies can benefit from banding through and experienced orthotist, and the younger the better results you'll see. Good luck and let us know how the repoing goes. , mom to Hannah, DOC #3 3/30 Cape Cod, Ma > Hello everyone. My name is Nikki and I am raising my grandson. He > will be three months old in a week. Guest guest
Hi Nikki I am in Vancouver, and have gone thru all the hoops that you need to for going the helmet route if you decide to go that route in the future for your grandson. The info that Debbie gave you is correct, Alan is the only orthotist in BC who does do the helmet, however the neurosurgeon he worked closely with is no longer in BC, she is now in Dallas, Texas. I would suggest strongly that you do all the repo that you can, but in the meantime if you are even considering the helmet, I would start by trying to get into see a neurosurgeon at Children's hospital in Vancouver immediately. I only say that because we had a bit of a wait, and I am not certain who is the neurosurgeon you would be seeing (the waitlists can be very long, and with plagio, time is of the essence). You will need a doctor's referral to get into Children's hospital. Please feel free to e-mail me to ask any questions etc. My son was in the helmet for about 7 months (he started at a year old), so I have had lots of experience with the locally made helmet here. I have alot of other connections as well that may make the journey a bit easier for you if you decide to go that route in the future. Good luck , mom to Ethan Helmet Grad Vancouver, BC. > Hello everyone. My name is Nikki and I am raising my grandson. He > will be three months old in a week.
