Guest guest
HI Everyone, I know just this past week , 's mommy was posting about the stretches and how they could be doing more harm than good if the baby is fighting them. I personally owe her a huge "I'm Sorry" and a HUGE Thank You. I read her post and just sort of put it in the back of my mind and figured it was just for those with older babies. Today ECI, whom I had pretty much given up on came to do and evaluation on for her tort. We found out they were in the middle of transfering offices and that is what has taken them nearly 2 months to get this done. Anyways, I remembered 's posts and asked the Occupational Therapists, the Registered Infant Massage Therapist, (who is also the Intake Coordinator), and the Physical Therapist about doing the exercises even whent he baby is fighting them, they all resoundly said DO NOT force the stretches because just like said they build the muscle, not stretch it. I was so shocked because just this past Monday we had gone to Dr. Hobar's office,(the craniofacial specialist) and seen his nurse practitionor Trish on, who preceded to stretch while talking to us about the stretches. The whole time was fighting her so she showed us how to hold her head while she was lying on her side and twist her shoulder back. Trish said this type of stretch was especially good if the child is resisting!!!! Right now I am somewhere between relieved, (that we found out the right way), and pissed because this woman we trusted could have done more harm than good. I plan on calling Dr. Hobar's office tomorrow and speaking with Trish. I want to give her the info we have been given. The GREAT news is that does qualify for in-home therapy based on the tightness in her neck and back, this is good because the nearest PT.OT.or RMT is in Ft Worth 50 miles away. will be getting Physical Therapy and Infant Massage Therapy!!!! They also said is at a 12 month level on her fine and gross motor skills, and she is at an 11 month level on her language and cognition. I know this is long and I amsorry for that, but I want to make sure everyone with a Tort baby asks their PT about those stretches, God knows we don't want to harm those neck muscles in any way. in Texas Mom to , DOCband Grad 7/23/04 Plagio/Brachy(resolved)/Tort Hey Everyone, Visit 's NEW Web Page at: www.babiesonline.com/babies/k/kathryn9703 Make sure to Sign Her guestbook!!! Guest guest
, I know very little about tort, since Remy didn't have it, but am always trying to learn more about it so that I can be a better help to plagio parents. I appreciate your posting about this concern. I found yours and 's explanation of the stretching exercises very interesting - it's almost as if the baby actively fighting the stretch is actually resistance training where they are using and building the muscles, instead of a pure muscle stretch, which I assume is the objective. I would be interested to know if you get any feedback on your follow- up. Guest guest
, Thank you SO much for your post - I wondered a little bit about that myself...it just makes sense that if they are resisting that much they are strengthening & tightening the same muscle we are trying to stretch - I have found that the " head tilt hold " (not exactly sure of the name) that we were taught works best for our 4 month old Lake, because he is stretching the muscle basically by himself and not by the force of our hands. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for sharing, I have read about this on the tort board as well in the past. I always tried to make stretching fun for Aidan. Like sitting him on my lap and bending him backwards tickeling and kissing on him and then sneaking a stretch or two in.
