Gail,

I have been searching and searching for any reference to plagio

treatment in Japan, but I can't find any direct reference to helmets

or bands. What I have found is a recent study from Japan on

skeletal analysis comparing brachy and plagio. This link to this

study is also in our LINKS/PLAGIO STUDIES AND RESEARCH folder, but

I'll post it here (if the link is two lines long, you may need to

copy and paste the whole link to your address bar):

Scand J Plast Reconstr Surg Hand Surg. 2001 Jun;35(2):165-75.

The deformities of craniofacial bones in brachycephaly (n = 2) and

plagiocephaly (n = 2) were compared using three-dimensional skull

replicas. In brachycephaly the bilateral deformities of the cranial

base were similar to the unilateral deformities on the affected side

in plagiocephaly. Shortening of the anterior-middle cranial fossas

and expansion of the middle cranial fossas suggest downward and

anterior displacement of both temporomandibular joints

resulting in the underdevelopment of the middle-inferior facial

bones, though this is less conspicuous in brachycephaly for three

reasons. The most important one is that the patients have an

imposing facial morphology characterised by high, protruding facial

bones, as found on the affected side in plagiocephaly. Secondly, the

frontal bones are flattened and positioned posteriorly in the

anteroposterior direction, which also helps to mask the

underdevelopment of the middle-inferior facial bones. Finally, as

bony deformities are symmetrical in brachycephaly, they are not as

obvious as they would be if they were unilateral.

Obviously the authors have an interest in plagiocephaly and

brachycephaly, so perhaps your friend could use the information

about this study of theirs to contact the authors, or the plastic

surgery department at the above-mentioned facility and inquire about

treatment options.

The only other item I could find, is a listing of a cleft-

palate/craniofacial team in Japan from a craniofacial disorder

group. Many times, plagiocephaly assessment and treatment can be

found in a craniofacial plastic surgery department, and sometimes,

at least, the specialists are shared for both types of problems.

Maybe your friend could try contacting them and seeing what they

know:

Would you let me know if any of these leads pan out? Also, if you

hear that they have found treatment in Japan, please let us know so

that we can add the appropriate data in the Helmet/Band Database for

any future members!

Take care,

Christie,

You rock! I forwarded all this info to my friend in Tokyo and will

let you know if they get anywhere with it. Last night I sent them

all the standard links to plagio info, helmets and repositioning, but

now they have a place to start locally. This group is still awesome.

Hey Dustie,

Did you see the info that Christie posted? She's awesome. Let me

know if you come across anything else.

Gail

P.S. When's the next rodeo? Sam has new boots to go with his

haircut, and he can't wait to show them off.
