Guest guest
My husband and I recently had the Celiac panel of blood tests done. The doctor told me that neither he or I have Celiac, but I thought the blood tests could only tell if you were Gluten Intolerant and you might still have Celiac. Or does one of the blood tests on the panel (or combination of results) tell if you have Celiac. ????? He gets sick when he eats gluten but his blood tests weren't out of wack. ??? Thanks for any help you can be. Liz
Guest guest
Liz, Nine years ago, my son was 2 years old and failure to thrive. He had a strong family history for celiac. When he had blood drawn to test for it, we were told that there were false negatives, but not false positives, meaning if the tests were negative, it didn't mean that he didn't have celiac. Well, the results were negative, but by the time I got them back, I had already eliminated gluten from his diet. Within a few days he had gone from diarrhea eight times a day to normal bowel movements. He progressively gained weight. The doctor told me that was a diagnosis in itself. lizcpa2 wrote: He gets sick when he eats gluten but his blood tests weren't out of wack. ??? Thanks for any help you can be. Guest guest
All three of my kids came back with borderline results, either just at the top of negative or at the bottom of positive. If I'd followed the doctor's advice, they would still be eating gluten foods. However, all three are on gf diets now and the change in them physically and emotionally has been astounding. None of them may have CD at this point, but they are all obviously gluten intolerant. When I spoke with a different pediatrician about their reactions to the gf diet, this doctor claimed that a dietary challenge, in her opinion, was the most definitive test for any food allergy/intolerance. Her opinion was that if someone has a negative reaction to a food, whether current laboratory testing agree that the person has a problem or not, the food is obviously doing something negative and should be avoided. > > He gets sick when he eats gluten but his blood tests weren't out of > wack. ??? I had biopsies taken twice (the first time the samples weren't the best), and both times they showed characteristics of CD which made it suggestive of CD, but it wasn't conclusive. So I didn't really have a definitive diagnosis. But since I've been gluten-free (over 1 year), my symptoms have improved and I've gained back some of the weight I lost. Like others have said, I believe that the diagnosis is confirmed when there is improvement on the diet. -Laurie in CT
