I can't speak to rehab usage, but I know of an assisted living facility

that uses the Wii. They use the Wii Sports that came with the system as

it has " sports " that are familiar to the residents i.e. golf, bowling,

tennis, etc. Very creative idea!

Our facility does short term rehab and we have just purchased a Wii

system and were wondering if any who has used it as a portion of their

therapy program can suggest the best games for us to purchase.

None of us in th facility has one at home so we aren't that familiar

with it.

Also, if you have used it, how well is it helping.

We use the Wii sports, Wii play, and Wii playground currently. Our

patients seem to really like it. It is a wonderful alternative to

repetitions or even timer usage for exercise and neuro re-ed

treatments.

We use it later in their treatment matriculation after they have

accompliashed some of the basics/stabilization/etc. that need to

happen.

So far our orthopedic (shoulder, spine, ankle, hip and knee patients

have responded well and enthusiastically.

However, keeping close tabs on range, control, safety, and technique

have continued to be of paramount importance. We not just allow the

patient to play without direct supervision. Protecting those post ops

and fall risks is ...well...you know... important.

Consider DDR - Dance Dance Revolution - it has timing and motor control

applications.

I imagine the system could be easily tweaked to tone it down a bit to a

sub-beginner mode.

I think that game has excellent applications in an outpatient practice where

timing and motor control might be better in the average patient. I see some of

the " rehab " systems out there for $thousands$ when one could really just by a

Wii and some foot pads and spend $500.

I'd love to approach some of the software engineers at Nintendo and design a

P.T./rehab/training based coordination game that spans from very low level to

high level individuals.

Just a thought.

I do not have a Wii at work, but at home.

The game that comes with the system (Wii Sports) is very good. It has

bowling, tennis, golf and boxing. Lots of different arm, leg and trunk

movements.

We also have the Boogie game - which is dancing, lots of great weight

shifting!

I agree with using the DDR. It can be used for all ages of individuals

(per anecdotal info from our family's various holiday gatherings). My

son did a middle school research project and showed that HR increases

the same as walking on a treadmill briskly for cardio benefits and was

much more fun for the teenagers and young adults that he had in his

study.

The Wii games are also fun and there is more variety including upper

body movements in some of the games but good luck finding one to buy!

I spoke with Nintendo regarding this a few months ago.

We used a Wii for marketing at a health fair and are

developing programs to use in the clinic. I used the

sports game so far. Nintendo responded that a rehab

specific exercise game would not have a large enough

target market. However, Nintendo is already developing

an exercise based video game which is simply following

an animated exercise instructor - aerobics etc. This

would likely be a good game to utilize.

I work in an ECF and we are currently using Wii with our Residents. We would

also recommend Wii sports as most are familiar with the movements and rules

required to play. However, Mama's Cook-off and Smooth Moves are also

recommend. Smooth moves requires various UE ROM tasks at a fast pace. It has

made a great impact with our residents, they love to play and don't realize they

are doing therapy. We have noticed most of our improvements in balance.
