Guest guest
My son Owen's had his helmet for a little over two months now (banded at 5 months). The neuro and ortho both said he'd wear it for two or three months, and there's been a ton of improvement. He's not completely round, but he's round enough that I'm satisfied. My husband thinks we should keep the helmet on for a little longer. We saw the neuro for a follow-up a few days ago, and he said Owen could wear the helmet til he outgrows it or we could take it off now, our choice. He also said we could put it on just when he sleeps or is in the car for a long time. The ortho said he had a lot more room til it's outgrown. The literature the ortho gave us said he sould wear it 23 hours until the day it's removed for good. I haven't asked him directly about part-time wear, but I will at our appt next week. What advise did you get from the pros about part-time wear toward the end of treatment? If you did p-t, was there still improvement afterwards? Thanks in advance for your response! Guest guest
Hi Nickie, I'm not sure we've had any members use a helmet part time at the end in a long time, which is probably why nobody responded to you. I would caution against it simply b/c out of the band his head can change and alter the fitting of his band. I would just make the decision of whether or not to be comletely done. If you are 100% happy at this point than take him out of it, but if you'd like to see a more correction, he's plenty young to see some. , mom to Hannah, DOCband #3 3/30 Cape Cod, Ma > My son Owen's had his helmet for a little over two months now > (banded at 5 months). Guest guest
Hi Nickie, My daughter had her local helmet for 6 months. At the end, the doctor said that there was little chance of improvement because of her age and said that although it still fit her, I could take it off for good. I opted to keep it on her, but only part time at that point. I had her sleep in it and wear it in the carseat etc. She was already 14 months old (using a local helmet) and I felt she no longer needed it while she was up and around. As you know, passive helmet apply no real pressure, so having on her was pointless because head growth is so much slower at that age (or so I thought). Turns out, that she did have a hugh growth spurt and probably would have had more correction if it had been on 23/7. This is only my opinion, but if your son can get more correction (and at his age, his head growth is still very very active), I'd keep the helmet on him for a while longer, and not just part time. You mentioned that you are pleased with the results, but would you be even more pleased with furthur correction? I guess that is the question that your heart needs to answer. Please let us know how everything goes. , mom to Makenna LLUMC helmet grad '03 > My son Owen's had his helmet for a little over two months now > (banded at 5 months). Guest guest
Thanks for the input. I think I know in my heart he should keep wearing it, I just really want someone to tell me he can stop:) We saw the ortho today and he said he wouldn't suggest part-time wear. He said if we were going out for a couple hours and Owen was going to be held/upright the whole time, we could take it off him, but we should keep up with the treatment full-time. He can definitely get more correction; in fact, I think there's been some in the two weeks since we saw the neuro. I think part of my problem is that when we started this whole thing, everyone was saying two or three months. So two months later I'm expecting an end in sight, and now they're saying until he outgrows the helmet, and no one can say when that'll be (probably another month or two). I guess I wish they'd explained this in the beginning, and now maybe I wouldn't be so antsy. And they're scheduling his adjustments a month apart now, so it seems like even longer before he's done. Between this and everything we've been thru with the insurance company and the helmet company money-wise, I'm just ready for this whole experience to be over with. I'm apparently feeling a little sorry for myself right now:) Thanks for listening! Nickie > > My son Owen's had his helmet for a little over two months now > > (banded at 5 months). Guest guest
Oh Nickie, I know just how you feel! We all just wanted it to be over with. Just as soon as he has completed treatment, you will be SO glad you stuck to the treatment protocol! You are doing a great job!
