Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I don't know too much about allergy reactions, but is it the same arm the blood was drawn? Is she scratching at the site where they drew the blood or a different site on the same arm? Are there welts or raised bumps on the red area? Those descriptors may help someone identify what is going on. As for the constipation, beats me what to do since we have been dealing with this issue for a long time and haven't found a remedy. I would suggest NOT giving the nut flours right now as they were big constipators for my son and if your daughter was already constipated before adding the nut flours, then the constipation will only get worse. One short term solution to my son's constipation was epsom salts (2 tsps will make soft logs, 3 tsps will make diarrhea for a 58 pound child based on my experience with my son)in water or place the epsom salts in capsules (very time consuming and it took about 6, size '0', capsules per teaspoon of epsom salts) and have her swallow the capsules instead of drinking the water with the epsom salts. I was told I shouldn't use the epsom salts (magnesium sulfate)long term but don't know why at this point. We have just started MSM (methylsulfamethane) to see if the sulfur in this product will work on softening his stools. I'll keep everyone posted on that one. Also, I was told not to worry about the zuchinni seeds because the zuchinni we have in the U.S. now are very small. Hope this helps somewhat and take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA with 10 yr old on SCD 4 weeks, 5 days > Hi me again, > This afternoon I gave Abby three small Midas Gold Pancakes ( they have one cup of almond flour), and I put a small amount of almond butter on top for a snack. I don't know if the almond has anything to do with it but she just started scratching one arm until it got really red. She had a bruise on it but think it was from holding her down to get a blood draw this morning. She just keeps scratching and it's really red. Does this sound like a reaction to almond? She is so sensitive to everything and feel like I am giving her a lot of fruit, and honey as well. Does this diet seem to make the phenol/salicylate problem worse sometimes? > Also, I cooked some zucchini and was going to de-seed it but it was too mushy. She is getting the prune mixture in the a.m. and a half dose of miralax in the afternoon but still will skip a day or two going. Guest guest
Hi Becky, I lived in Virginia for many years! Met and married my husband in Newport News..............I also lived in Va. Beach as a child. ( my dad was Navy). No the reaction was in the other arm. My husband thinks holding her down caused the bruise but then this afternoon she couldn't stop scratching it. She's not that verbal and she even said " It hurts " . I noticed a rash on her lower back too. Her skin is very sensitive and gets red easy. No welts, just scratch marks that Abby made. It seemed to happen so fast after she ate the almond so that's why I suspected it. I just freak out when I see bruises when she comes home from school because about a year and a half ago a teacher assaulted her and made a hand print bruise on her arm. (I've got two separate issues here..........sorry). Anyway, she's now not wanting to eat a lot of what I am making for dinner and is skipping a lot of meals. I am starting to get worried about that too. God shouldn't of given me an autistic child because I am a big worrier. She's eating applesauce and banana everyday and a egg, and she'll eat a lot of beef but the veggies she'll try once and then not a second time. I am afraid she is going to be living off of juice, fruit and meat ! I made a turkey meat loaf for dinner with zucchini, egg and tomato sauce and then some sauce on top. I thought she would love it but wouldn't eat a thing. The constipation keeps her from eating sometimes but I know she's probably having fry, chip, GF pasta, Van's Waffle's and Health Valley Soup withdrawals!!!!Thanks for responding and it does help. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I really enjoy living here in Chesapeake. The weather is great and the people are nice. The only problem is the schools don't provide any other teaching method besides TEACCH. Boy, that's terrible about the teacher causing the bruising.....that's another reason I don't have my son in a school. How goes the itching and poop situation? Did you try some topical cream to ease the itching (I was thinking that maybe there's a Benadryl cream or something like that for rashes)? We tried the Midas Gold pancakes on our son last summer and they really constipated him alot. Maybe you could try the pecan flour someone else suggested instead of the almond flour. I have only used the almond flour and quit very quickly after watching his stools get harder and haven't been brave enough to try any other nut flour. I wonder if the Sneaky Veggie Pancakes would work better; they were accepted by my son and he's quite picky about his pancakes. Take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA
Guest guest
Hi , A lot of the kids on the diet start with pecan butter or pecan flour, they seem to tolerate it better than almonds. Once on the diet a while some find that the almond flour is then tolerated. YOu don't need to deseed the small zucchini, just peel it at the beginning. Have you tried any of the sneaky muffin/pancake recipes? They are a great place to hide vegetables.Such as 's Muffins, sneaky veggie pancakes under the recipe section at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html Also Avocado Meat Loaf or the meatloaf recipe in BTVC. Can you also put how long you have been on the SCD in your signature? It helps a lot when answering questions. Guest guest
Are you home schooling? I have done that twice before for short periods but she misses all interaction and stimulation of going to school. TEACCH originated in NC so I know a lot about it. I'm not too thrilled with it either. It's good for younger kids when they are just learning. Yes, it's hard for us to trust as well as Abby, especially since she is mostly non-verbal. She can say one or two words together but never an explanation. I put on some Cortisone Cream but may do the Benadryl tonight. Is that legal to ingest? Her arm was really red and irritated today. She has not gone #2 for a couple of days but for her that is long enough for it to affect her behavior. I have a funny feeling about the almond flour so I am going to stop it but keep using a little bit of the almond butter. What about strawberries? Have you used those? I am planning to make some jam to put on the banana/egg pancake. Thanks for the suggestion about the sneaky veggie...........I have not made those and plan too. Which veggie works best in those? Thanks. Kathy mom of Abby-9, ASD, UC and Hannah-13 Re: allergic reactions to SCD > Hi Kathy, > I really enjoy living here in Chesapeake. The weather is great > and the people are nice. Guest guest
" What about strawberries? Have you used those? I am planning to make some jam to put on the banana/egg pancake. " Make sure you press the strawberries through a sieve to remove all of the seeds after you cook them. The seeds are too hard to digest for the beginning of the diet. This would be true for any of the berries as well. There is a really yummy jam recipe on pecanbread.com. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, If I remember correctly, strawberries are one of the fruits that one can develop an allergic reaction easily so we haven't touched that fruit yet. I don't even know the phenol content of them. As for the sneaky veggie recipe, we use cooked pureed carrots but you can use zuchinni or any other veggie you want to use. What I found out that works best is to make the batter the night before and place it in a bowl in the fridge. The next morning, then slowly pull the top of the veggie pancake batter to the side and you'll see a pool of water below. I dump some of that water out so I have a bit of a drier batter since when I initially made these pancakes, they fell apart easily because they were so wet. Also be sure to oil your griddle or pan before pouring the batter, and do this each time you pour another pancake. Hope Abby's rash goes away and yes, I have been homeschooling even before I knew that our third son had autism. Interesting how God works in mysterious ways. My son also can't explain things and talks in two to 4 word phrases. He also has receptive problems, but progressing very slowly. Guest guest
Hi Becky, I am simmering pureed strawberries and honey right now! Have you done the SAGE testing? We did it through Dr. Bradstreet's office and she showed really allergic to orange, sweet potato and watermelon! There was a bunch more that were lesser reactive but strawberries and nuts were not included. I was surprised about the nuts. Thanks for the idea about the pancake batter........it does seem to be thin without any flour in it. Yes, her arm is red still and the small of her back...........it has to be the almond flour because I can't think of what else it could be. I saw " pecan meal " at Whole Foods today. Is that the way it usually comes? What do you do, just grind it up further? Thanks so much, I am learning so much I feel like I could move to a farm and be self-sufficient (no not really!) Guest guest
Hi Kathy, No, we haven't done the SAGE testing as we are quite low on funds right now. We have the oldest child in private high school, the second getting educational therapy for his dysgraphia, the third is the autistic one and the two year old was getting speech therapy since he is speech delayed (we stopped in December since I couldn't stand the office receptionist nor the stress of getting him there.) So we have to be very careful where we put our money right now. As for the nut flours, I have no idea how the pecan flour comes and where to get it. You may want to do a search on pecan flour and I bet a message will have where you can purchase the pecan flour. I'm just not willing to spend the money on it right now since I know he get constipated on both almond flour and peanut butter. Hope the rash goes away soon. I wonder if an epsom salts bath would make it better if it is a phenol reaction? I guess I would try the benadryl first and if that doesn't get it to go away, then try the epsom baths to see if the rash is due to the phenols. Hope this helps and take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA with 10 yr old on SCD 4 wks6 days > > > Are you home schooling? Guest guest
Hi Becky, We only did the testing because it was highly recommended by Dr. Bradstreet when he saw Abby in Florida last summer. It's expensive but the best test there is for food/ additive allergies. For some reason the insurance seems to always pay for the whole amount of that test. We are going to find a DAN doctor closer to us because all these trips from NC to New York and Florida are getting expensive and stressful. Anyway, you have a lot on your plate.........God bless you! Thank you for all the advice..........does the Epsom salts baths work better than the Mag. Sulfate Cream? Abby is not doing any better but started sneezing a lot this afternoon so now I am thinking it's a combo of die-off, almond flour and a cold virus. But at least I know now.
