Guest guest
Avapro and all the other angiotensin II receptor blockers have been shown in clinical trials to be helpful in delaying progression of chronic glomerular kidney diseases - independantly from their blood pressure lowering. Their effect on potassium is very limited. I even take one of them while I'm on dialysis, and my potassium is virtually unchanged from before. The warning against taking potassium supplements isn't about food, but rather potassium-based salt substitutes like NoSalt. Those are mainly potassium chloride, and therefore very high in potassium - much higher than the average fruit. Nobody with kidney disease should be using a product like that even if they aren't on any blood pressure medication at all. Pierre Re: (unknown) > Hi Tonya, > I have borderline high BP. So I started taking half a tablet of Avapro (on my Dr's advice). First I read 3 pages of possible side effects. My Kidney specialist, told me that I could expect an increase in salt in my blood, a dry cough, and a skin rash, as a result of taking Avapro. > I started a week ago, and have rapidly increased my coughing. I also notice a burning sensation in my digestive tract. So I have begun weening myself off the Avapro by reducing the medication to a quarter of a tablet a day instead of the half tablet prescribed. The full tablet is 75 ml. I hope to be off it, before the end of the week. > My diastolic reading dropped from mid 90's to mid 80's and mid 70's. > Stamped on the packet of Avapro was " avoid potassium supplements " . > Many fruits have potassium. And I felt, the longer I remain on this med, > the greater the threat of potassium would become, for my body to deal with it. > So, because my family history has angina pectoris occuring on my father's side of the family. And I am male, and over 50. I did some research on the herbal side of things. What I found out, was that Ginkgo Biloba, Hawthorn and Garlic, > blended into specific formulation in a tablet will help to reduce BP , and help circulation and help my cardiovascular system, without the side effects that Avapro was presenting. > Yes I do take fish oil with meals.( Only 3 or 4 a day, spread out). And I have increased my salmon and sardines in my weekly diet (no salt added). The D.H.E.A. & E.P.A. activate the prostaglandins. This is of great benefit for myself. > I should quit my one mug of coffee, per day!! This is my greatest sin! > Walking for 2 hours in the forrest, on the mountain side, frequently, is of emmense benefit. > I include psyllium Husks (once or twice a week) with rice milk, for regular detox. I drink mostly water, and sometimes cranberry juice. > I have been fortunate to have been diagnosed with slow progression of Igan, and not the rapid kind. I have had igan for 29 years. > I am a great believer in creative visualisation, intuition, & prayer, for self protection against pollution, and desease. > God Bless, > > Pete. >
