Hi ,

Yes I eat Chinese food and tend to stick to the " white sauce " dishes such as Moo

Goo Gai Pan, Shrimp with snow peas, etc. Just be sure to ask what they use as a

thickening agent (corn starch or flour), if it's corn starch it's safe if it's

flour well you know, its not. The location I visit most often doesn't thicken

my food at all and it is quite good. I have also heard people say they take

their own GF soy sauce and the cook uses it on their food.

I hope you are able find something safe to eat.

We went out to eat at our favorite chinese buffet Thursday night. It

was our first time there since dd was diagnosed. It was quite

frustrating trying to ask the staff about what she could have. No

one there seemed to speak english very well. I asked them what kind

of soy sauce they used and explained why I needed to know trying to

use simple terms. The guy took me to the buffet and showed me which

items had soy sauce. It took several more attempts and a visit from

the manager before they understood what I meant. It turns out, I

think, that they use Kikkoman, which has wheat. So I did not feed

her anything with soy sauce. It was late and we were hungry so I

decided not to even try to ask about cross contamination. I fed her

the baked chicken, white rice, shrimp, and crawfish. All of these

items are quite plain. Unfortunately, while I was up getting my

food, my husband fed her chicken on a stick (mandarin or teriyaki)

which has soy sauce. So now I don't know for sure if what she was

supposed to eat would have been OK. I went online to

mandarinhouse.com to see what it had. It only listed 4 TN

locations. I emailed them via their suggestions link to inquire if

they were a part of the same chain and how I could find out about gf

food offerings. I also mentioned that I would be in Pigeon Forge

this coming summer so that even if they are not part of a larger

chain, I would appreciate the information so that we could eat there

while we were in TN. I have not heard back from them, but will let

you know.

Does anybody else here eat chinese food and if so, how do you find

out what is gf?

Your best bet is to find a local place with an owner

or staff who knows English well and talk to them ahead

of time. Don't wait until the meal when the restaurant

is busy. White sauces are safest.

Second, avoid buffets. You're much more likely to get

contamination. The only commercial Asian food I've had

since going GF is at a Japanese steak house where the

owner agreed to have the chef doing our meal use my

soy sauce.

We make our own. It only takes me about 20 minutes from beginning to end, and it's just as good (other than having to do dishes when I'm done!). We've had good luck with Japanese, though, which is quite similar.

Becki,

That is a good idea. I have a great Fried Rice recipe that a friend

gave me that turns out quite well. If anyone is interested in it, I

will post it. Could you post some of the recipes that you use? If

they are listed in the files, let me know and I will find them. My

only problem is that we live so far away from everything that when we

go into town once a week (1.5-2 hrs away), we have to eat at least

one meal out. I am so sick of McD's. Someone had mentioned knowing

someone going into the cici's franchise. Have you gotten the info

yet? We like eating there and they are so accomodating, I just need

to know which items I can request they cook into our crustless pizza.

I made an awesome Japanese tonight. Plain steamed rice (though you can fry it).

Ingredients:

1 zuccini

1 summer squash

8 oz sliced mushrooms

2 Tbsp butter

1/2 red onion, chopped

2 small steaks cut into strips

20 uncooked, peeled and deveined shrimp

Instructions:

1) Sautee onion in butter and then add zuccini and sumemr squash (sliced in long, skinny strips). Add the mushrooms, and saute all veggies until soft, but not slimy. Add salt and pepper to taste.

2) Remove veggies, and keep warm. Brown beef, and season with salt and pepper. Add the shrimp and cook until a lovely pink color. Season meats with Terriyaki sauce (GF of course!).

3) Serve veggies and meat over warm rice.

YUUUUMMMM!!!!! My hubby begged for more tonight!
