ASD 3yr Old Refuses to eat- Ideas?

I am anxiously seeking advice from some SCD veterans. My 3 year old

ASD son is now 3 weeks into the diet and so is my 18 month old

daughter (showing early celiac signs ie. bloating tummy, constantly

eating, way under weight/height). My daughter will eat just about

anything and seems to be doing well - though no noticable changes. My

son, on the other hand, will still only eat certain foods (almond

pancakes, SCD muffins, some SCD bread, and pears). It has gotten to

the point where he has dark circle under his eyes and now is quite

accumstom to skipping dinner (I refuse to give him almond flour baked

goods to entice him to eat the meat and veggies for dinner). I am

terrified that I will be reported to CPS by a family member, teacher

or his doctor. I have almost no support and too much critism. I am

trying to follow my gut, but so much negative influences makes me

want to panic and go back to GF/CF. Can anyone give me some advice on

how to entice a picky eater and how long should I allow this

avoidance of food to last before I am allowed to panic? My sister's

doctor was quite alarmed by SCD and warned her that she had another

family whose young child actually died from malnutrition - she said

that the child ate spuratically and over an extended time on which

ever diet he/she was on became very ill and they caught it too late

and he/she died. Could I be so niave that this is happening to my

child? What can I do to avoid this at all costs? Any suggestions will

be greatly appreciated. I think SCD is the best diet I've found yet

and seemed to really make since after my son began limiting himself

to french fries for several weeks on the GF/CF diet. Thank you for

listening.

I think you really have to try to get your son off the nut flours.

What did he eat prior to that? Did he do an intro diet? What about

some veggie pancakes or banana pancakes for breakfast? There is a

sneaky muffin recipe that I used in the beginning. It might be a

compromise that your son would like. It had cooked chicken, squash,

banana, and nut flour. I think you could add blueberries also. My

kids loved those in the beginning and they were loaded with

nutrition. Do you think that would work? If you want, I could post

the recipe. Also, there is the pumpkin pie filling which is really

tasty with no nut flours. Will he eat pear or applesauce? He

really needs to expand his diet. I hope these ideas can work for

you.

Hi Amy,

Did you start with the intro diet or the ASD intro? If you can't do that

maybe you need to go back to more basic foods, easier to digest. Did you

try pecan butter to make muffins and pancakes. A lot of ASD kids have

problems with almonds at first and tolerate pecans easier. And it also may be

too soon for nut flour can you use nut butter instead

You said he skips Dinner but does he eat other meals?

My daughter(NT) gets dark circles under her eyes sometimes. When that

happens I pull back to a more basic diet for a day or so until it clears up.

Do you have a doctor of your own that is supportive of the diet? Where do

you live? We might be able to find a doctor near by you, in case you want

an MD to talk to and be a little more supportive. There is a list at

http://www.scdiet.org/8resources/doctors.html but others on the list may be

able to help with this more readily.

BTW, are the pears peeled and cooked? It is probably to soon for raw foods.

If they are that may also be contributing to the dark circles.

There are lots of great recipes on www.pecanbread.com for picky eaters.

There are lots of ways to get veggies into the kids. If you could tell us

more what he likes we may be able to give more specific ideas. But if he is

eating pancakes and muffins you could try the chicken pancakes, sneaky

vegetable pancakes, meatloaf for hiding vegetables, squash french fries,

veggie pizza - these are all at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html
