Guest guest
I'm so sorry that this has happened, kinda disappointing huh? Your email made it sound like CT was too concerned? Am I right? That seemed weird to me too. You'd think especially in the beginning they'd want a good fit...to get off to a good start. What a shame, Abbey is in a STAR band and on the widest part of her head in back is where she had a really dark red spot ALWAYS when I take it off it's really red, my ortho says that as long as it fades in an hour and doesn't stay as red as the beginning then it's ok, but it sounds like had a little different situation with the skin peeling and all, thats why I'm surprised that thet didn't want to see him, you don't want a skin breakdown right off the bat. Well keep us posted, I got Aveeno Oatmeal Bath and made it into a paste and I slathered in on Abbey's head at bath time,(I let it sit on there for like 15 min) really helped with dryness. Keep us posted I hope he gets better. Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear that ! What did they say about the red spot? I don't think I would want to see a " really dark red spot " as just mentioned even if it faded in an hour! I know, it is supposedly fine, but it would scare me. I'm so confused about this active/passive stuff. Do you *want* to see red spots as long as they fade bcz that means it's " actively " working on their head? I have only seen pink spots on Colin's head that faded. Hopefully they just had an off day and will be more responsive to your calls from now on. Being who I am, I would've called back sooner than 6 pm! Please let us know how he's doing. Guest guest
Hi, My daughter was just banded on monday also. So, emotional right? She had two red spots on either side of her head...one didn't fade after an hour so I took her in for a fitting..after I took it off after the fitting it seemed to look worse on the right side..but after rechecking it, it seemed fine. Such a stressful time for us parents, huh? Unfortunately, sounds like you had a bad fitting...rebecca is a tummy sleeper as well..but no red spots on the forehead.. may have just laid in that one area too long. Such a shame though that CT didn't get back to you right away..they should know that we are very anxious and want to do the right thing. Guest guest
Hey , I wouldnt take no for an answer. needs to get his red spot checked and because an ortho wasn't available isn't solving any problems. They could have easily directed you to the other Glenview office Friday. I know Kay was in because we were there Friday morning. I believe the Oakbrook office is open on Saturdays unless they changed their hours. Could you get squeezed in this morning? I'm sorry you have to go through this all in the first week. If I were you I would just call their ears off until they get you in and solve the fit issue. had a really angry red spot Friday morning. Guest guest
Yes, one. Be more assertive. In few words, demand that he be seen when he needs to be seen. I would take him in even without an appointment if necessary. $3000 is enough money for them to have to provide a good care. There is no reason whatsoever for a helmet that does not fit on Monday to not be fitting yet by the next Monday. Good luck and I am very sorry this happened to you. Guest guest
, Oh how I completely understand your frustration. This might be a stupid suggestion, but you said he has a red spot that is starting to peel. Do you think you could apply a very thin round bandaid on top of it maybe w/ some neosporin on the red spot before you put the bandaid on (that stuff works wonders) and then try the helmet again for a few hours during the day (while wearing the thin bandaid) to see how his head tolerates it? OR is it just not an option to wear the helmet at all? The bandaid will provide a thin barrier between him and the helmet (less friction), and the neosporin will help heal the sore at the same time the helmet is on. Just a suggestion. Like I said, it might be a dumb one, but it's all I could think of. ~Amy, mommy to Jaden 8 mo's MN, plagio/mild tort/mild scoliosis, started CranioCap 4/23/04, started Chiro 6/29/04 > We started out the first day (Monday) great and the next morning woke up with a dark red spot that would not go away within the hour on his forehead right between his eyes. Guest guest
Dear , We were very disappointed. We were so happy to get him into the band and now I feel like we are off to a bad start. I guess it's partly my fault and CT's. I got the impression CT wasn't too concerned when I didn't get a call back all afternoon Tuesday which is why I put the band back on him. I know I should have called them back but I can be very aggressive and I'm trying to work on that. I didn't want to start off on the wrong foot with the office since we will be taking there for at least the next four months. I should know better. Thanks for the advice on the Aveeno Oatmeal bath. Guest guest
Hi Sue, Thanks for the note. They don't want me to put the band back on him until the red spot is gone so they can tell if the adjustment worked. It looks like after yesterday the adjustment didn't work. I'm going to try to keep the band on him a few hours at a time while he is awake this weekend and hopefully it will be fixed on Monday. You would think I would have learned my lesson on Tuesday and not taken no for an answer on Friday. The Ortho said there was no reason to see him if the spot wasn't completely gone but that sometimes pressure points turn yellowish/brown and then it's ok to put the band back on him. I didn't think his spot was yellowish/brown but my husband said he did so we put it back on him. I wanted her to see the spot and tell me if it was ok because I am new to this. Guest guest
Hi Lucia, You are absolutely right! My husband said on Wednesday - "It sure is a shame that a helmet that costs $3,000 doesn't fit correctly." I said that I thought he wasn't being fair since during the whole process there will be pressure spots that have to be adjusted. I am not blaming CT completely, I should have been more assertive. 1 week does seem like a long time to me but when I questioned the length of time it was taking the red spot to fade she said with some babies it takes that long. I'm not the most diplomatic person so when I'm assertive I can come off as pushy so I guess I was trying not to do that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a better fit next week and smooth sailing from here on out. Thanks, (Mommy to , 7 months, DocBand 7/12/04, Chicago) Re: first week - not a good fit Yes, one. Guest guest
Hi Amy, I remember reading that you were concerned with Jaden's fit too but that he is making great progress. I think the bandaid and Neosporin idea is a great one and I will try it so that he can at least wear the band this weekend. My husband is now questioning if the band can make his head shape worse if it doesn't fit properly! After reading about little and the Starband I'm more confused than ever. It's great to know we aren't the only parents struggling with these issues. Guest guest
Hi Crista, I asked about Saturday hours and they don't have them. Ginny told me that there were two babies that were banded Friday morning and that if they developed red spots that didn't fade in an hour they were supposed to keep the band on a few hours and then take it off and not sleep in it which is what she suggested for when I voiced my concerns over going the weekend without the band. In hindsight I should have taken him to the Oakbrook office on Friday morning but she didn't want to adjust the band any further until we knew if it was still causing the red spot so that seemed reasonable. He hadn't been able to wear the band since the adjustment made on Wednesday at noon. Hopefully, we will see Kay on Monday at our appointment and I will talk with her and Ginny about how we could have resolved 's situation sooner. It may have just been that the band was a very poor fit in the forehead area that would cause a Red spot for almost three days. I can't help but wonder if I made it worse by putting the band back on him Tuesday instead of calling back..... I did call on Wednesday evening to say I was concerned the spot was still there and Ginny said to keep the band off until the spot cleared up. I called again on Thursday to say I was concerned the spot wasn't going away but Ginny wasn't in and I talked to Joanne and she said to wait for the spot to go away. To be fair, Ginny did suggest we go to the Glenview office Friday afternoon but we didn't understand why we should drive all that way when we could easily be seen at Oakbrook (this conversation was at 9 am) around Noon time. I hope to have better news next week. The ortho was not there in the afternoon on Friday so we have to wait until noon on Monday so can't wear his band all weekend because the red spot got worse after wearing the adjusted band all Friday morning. > > We are pretty frustrated at this point - any suggestions? > > Thanks so much, >
Guest guest
, It is VERY common to need an adjustment or 3 or 4 in the beginning of treatment. It's really important for you to keep the band off of if a red mark doesn't fade within the hour off. Keeping it on him could lead to a skin break down. If a skin break down occurs he'll be out of his band for a while. This short amount of time that is out of his band isn't going to make a difference in the amount of correction he receives. Enjoy his naked little head. Let us know how you make out on Monday. > We started out the first day (Monday) great and the next morning woke up with a dark red spot that would not go away within the hour on his forehead right between his eyes. He is a tummy sleeper. > > I called CT but didn't receive a call back until 6p.m. Tuesday night because they misplaced my message. I waited all afternoon and didn't want not to wear his band so I put it back on him because I thought the spot had faded after a few hours (maybe a mistake). > > By Wed morning the red spot was pretty bad so I took him into CT and they adjusted the helmet. Guest guest
Hi Natasha, I didn't explain that part very clearly. On Friday, the ortho said if the spot had turned brownish/yellow then this was normal and we could put the band back on him a few hours at a time and keep checking for red spots that don't fade within the hour. My DH thought it looked brownish/yellow Friday but I thought it still looked red. This morning I could see the brownish/yellow color after not sleeping in the band. At this point I'm really second guessing my judgment - live & learn. Thanks for the supportive note, (Mommy to , 7 months, DocBand 7/12/04, Chicago) From: Natasha Gubash Plagiocephaly Sent: Saturday, July 17, 2004 11:29 AM Subject: Re: first week - not a good fit Gosh ,I can totally understand your frustration. Did you say that they wanted to wear it even though there was a skin breakdown or did I misread your post? Hopefully something can be done first thing monday. Guest guest
, I am late in replying, but read your post and the replies to 's first week. I am very sorry he had a skin breakdown! I have read where that will keep the baby out of the band for a few days owing to healing, but I do agree with that over the long haul, this will just be a tiny bump in the road not affecting his correction. I am not that knowledgeable about red spots and bands, but I have heard that if it last over one hour to leave the band off, even if you really want him to be in his band for correction. It would have been nice to receive a call back from CT in a timely manner to help you with advice on an issue like this - again I hope that this misplaced message is an exception. Just keep calling if you have another question - that is what they are there for! It can take several adjustments right at first to get the fit just right; with 's skin breakdown, that just stretches out the initial fitting and adjustments for a few days longer than normal. Will you be waiting until Monday to get another adjustment so that can where his helmet? Please let us know how that appointment goes. Ask them for some guidance on pink/red spots, etc, anything you can think of.
