Top Medical Stories For 2005

As we wind down the year of 2005, it's fitting to look at some of

the major health headlines over the past 12 months including bird

flu, obesity and prescription drugs. Medical correspondent Christy

takes a look at some of the top medical stories this year.

A bird flu in Asia called H5N1 could kill millions across the globe

according to some medical experts if it develops the ability to

spread from person to person. It got the attention of President

Bush. " I'm asking Congress to provide 583 million for pandemic

preparedness, including 100 million to help states complete and

exercise their pandemic plans now before a pandemic strikes. "

It started as a family issue and became a national debate over the

right to live or die. A 41-year-old Florida woman, Terri Schiavo,

lay in a coma for 15 years. Her husband wanted to take her off life

support but her parents objected and there was no living will. After

a multitude of court hearings and interventions from the governor

and Congress, Schiavo passed away after a court ordered her feeding

tube removed.

Efforts to battle childhood obesity continued this year from many

fronts. The government suggested lifestyle guidelines and new food

pyramids. Nutritionists called for moderation on sweets, like sodas.

Even pop icon, Mc went on a diet.

And finally, the end of this year brings relief for some elderly

Americans. On January 1st, the government's prescription drug

benefit for seniors begins. Federal officials say more than 21

million people have already signed up. " The average senior will save

about $1,300 a year by signing up for this program. " Seniors still

have until May 15th of 2006 to opt into the program.
