Hi everyone,

Thanks to everyone who responded to the discussion recently about CPT

coding.

I have been able to have a good discussion on and off the listserve, and I

wanted to summarize it for you.

I think it is best to start out with reminding everyone that there is a

process for change with the CPT codes and that starts with emailing

suggestions for change to the APTA at reimbursement@.... I would

imagine that the AOTA and ASHA also have channels for recommendations as

well. I would highly encourage those that emailed suggestions to forward

them to the APTA.

Second is to be aware that the APTA is already at work looking at changes in

the way we code for evaluation.

Third, that my suggestion about having a separate PT run coding system would

potentially be disastrous as it would be easier for other entities to

suggest and make changes, most of which would probably be detrimental to our

profession. After being educated about this, I agree that it is not a good

idea.

Fourth, is that it was pointed out that if the system of reimbursement for

the current CPT codes was improved, the need to change the codes (beyond the

current system for change) wouldn't really be an issue. Different systems

of reimbursement are being discussed at the highest levels already.

You know I had insight into the system and the problems but was missing some

of the facts. I needed to be reminded of what has been done on our behalf

by a lot of dedicated PT professionals, especially Helene Fearon and Steve

Levine who have taught most of us how to use the codes, to try and make a

cumbersome system better.

Bottom line, there is a process for CPT change and I encourage anyone with

suggestions to use it.
