Guest guest
All veterans & others who've been there - My dd is 4, we began SCD 100% 3 weeks ago today. Progress has been un~flipping believable!!!!! I must tell you that I recently (Dec 03) had to withdraw her from public school due to lack of FAPE. She had gotten so awful - behaviors, language went from 4 wd phrases to 1 wrd and only to get her needs met, stimms came back, therapy sucked - we couldn't get anything out of her no matter how fun we made it, her regression was everything that I saw in Dec. 02. I didn't think I'd ever get her back. We worked continuosly on everything, I researched SCD to great lengths and decided it was worth a shot. I followed all the rules, did the intro first and everything. I found out 1 week into the diet that her supplements were illegal and pulled those. We had some die-off, nothing near what we had when we went GF/CF (awful behaviors for weeks), but lots of progress just the same. For the first time in her life she had formed stools. By week 2 she was back at the table and doing her therapy, happily I might add, her language was coming back 2 wd phrases. By week 3, she drew her very first stickman on Wed. (he had no feet, hands and was missing the left arm - but hey, we're cooking with gas now!!!)She is calling for me, I hear her down the hall saying " mommy " , if she wakes before I do, she'll come into my room and pat me and say " wake up, mommy " , she has changed DRAMATICALLY over the last few weeks, she is happy, her belly has decreased in size, it seems the fog is lifting, her personality is coming out, she understands things you say to her, she can follow 2 step commands, the difference in her auditory processing is significant - needs lots more work, but you can tell things are changing. I could go on, but my list would get quite extensive and to be honest I can't remember everything w/o pulling out my journal !!!!!! For those who remember my bestest girlfriend, she's the one who doesn't eat sweets, and is the egg baby - she has eaten only scrambled eggs for 3 weeks now, with only Welch's white grape juice diluted with filtered water. At the beginning of week we introduced legal probiotics, and Friday we introduced legal Houston's enzymes. All her other supplements I've put on hold for a while, and I'll introduce them gradually each week - checking for tolerance levels. My question is this, as far as her diet goes, we're still on the intro. Yesterday she asked for crackers - this meant graham crackers to her - are there recipes for these or a substitute anyone knows of bc I can't find one. The other question is, bc she's asking for these things, they require nut flour and the stages say no nut flour for a while. I'll say we're still in the stages of " circus poop " (meaning, it's different shapes, colors, and sizes, textures and all that neat stuff - changing her diaper is like Forest Gump's box of chocolate expression - " you never know what you're gonna get " . They are much better than they were before SCD and she goes usually once every other day. With that being said, must I conform to the stages, should I be forcing her to eat things (she's a bit stubborn - I know her Momma and she's just like her (poor kid)) or should I just sit back and let her tummy be our guide. I make chicken pancakes, applesauce, pearsauce, yogurt, gleatin, squash chips, squash fries, banana pancakes, apple pancakes and all the other things she can have, but she won't touch them and screams " all done finished " when I show her the plate. I'm not ditching the diet - way to many positives to let a few negatives overwhelm me - I'd just like a little " hand-holding " and " comfort " and advice on a possible next step, if there is one. I appreciate your support and will take any feedback you'd like to offer... Karyn, Mom to 4.1, dx autism, GF/CF, SCD 3 weeks
