Veggie burgers don't count as a serving of vegetables. They are mostly

rice and grains with some vegetables.

Vegie and Fruit Servings Question

Hello All,

I'm doing the online version of WW and catching bits and pieces of

information by reading lists like this. Is there a place where I can

get a list of what makes up a serving of fruits and veggies as counted

in WW... 5 a day???

I looked on Dotie's page and didn't find one, I've looked on WW page and

idn't find one.

My main question is how much does a veggie burger count for in servings?

That's as in a Garden burger and then I know the Boca Burgers are about

half the size, half the points as the garden burger... so how many

servings would be in a Boca Burger?

Thanks,

Marlana,

Here's a great article that talks ABOUT servings sizes: (VERY

interesting and informative)

http://family.go.com/recipes/family/feature/dony19portion/dony19portio

n5.html

and here's one with a pretty good chart with serving sizes of all

kinds of foods on it:

I think that depends on the brand. Boca burgers are all soy so they count

as a grain/protein, but something like a " california burger " has enough

veggies to count. (I think)

One thing I learned this week is that I've been counting as *one* serving

things that should count as two, like an entire cup of carrots. That makes

me think I am going to aim for 5-9 servings of veggies a day not just five!

(but some days it's hard to get to five)

All I know is that my WW leader said that vegetarian patty's don't count

as a vegetable. So I haven't counted them from the start.

It's my understanding that a cup of carrots is only one serving if they

are raw. It's only if the veggies are cooked that they are 1 serving per

1/2 cup.

This is straight from my Week 1 Getting Started book...

" As a general guide, 1/2 cup of a vegetable counts as a serving. For

raw leafy vegetables, like lettuce and spinach, a serving is 1 cup. "

Therefore, I think cooked or raw, 1/2 cup of carrots is one serving.

Great Beth, thank you... the first link didn't work, but the second one is

great!

AVOCADO... I am going to assume it is a vegetable and not a fat. It wasn't

listed as either.

Anyone know for sure???

You are not helping my feeble little brain deal with this whole issue!!

This has been a point of irritation with me for over a year now. I

thought the same thing....1/2 cup veggies (cooked or raw, with the

exception of lettuce) is a serving, not necessarily a Point, but a

serving. Then my WW leader said something different. She said one cup

raw or 1/2 cup cooked is a serving. So one small apple is a serving or

1/2 cup of apple sauce. So I have been counting it that way for a while

now. Then the site that Beth posted yesterday (see link below ) agrees

with her so I was sure I finally had the whole thing down. With so much

confusion no wonder people over eat their veggies and hit plateaus!

LOL, I'm confused now, too! Let's add to the confusion. My palm

pilot program says 1 c. cooked 1 point and 1 c. uncooked 0 points.

I'm sure the difference in the points is due to uncooked having more

fiber.

All I know is that I'll never have a problem overeating veggies and

plateauing. I almost never get my 5 veggies and fruits in and to go

over would seem almost an impossibility to me.

I think it's a fruit not a vegetable. It has a pit so doesn't that make

it a fruit? Either way, I would definitely count it towards a serving of

fruit/veg.

Well.... I could be swayed in either direction.. but after doing a Google

search, the avocado is a fruit. http://www.avocado.org

" As a nutrient-dense fruit, avocados can be considered the perfect alluring

fruit because of its top ranking status of many erotic nutrients -- energy

producing magnesium, beautifying vitamin E, and heart-healthy

monounsaturated fat, among others. "

If you live in Boston or California, dunno about the rest of the country,

there's a huge variety of foods sold as " veggie burgers " . Some are mostly

soy but others are mostly veggies.

The ones I have now are " Dr Praegers' California Burgers " and the first

five ingredients are Carrots, Onion, String Beans, Zucchini, Oat Bran " so

I'm counting them as a veggie serving. But I wouldn't count a Boca burger

because it's all soybean.

(these are **one point* too! Hope they *taste* good!)
