I am very worried about what I have been reading in the net of flattened or ribbon stools, which is what my son has... He is 9 years old, and has a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. My pediatrician thought last Monday that it was probably constipation, so she gave us a stool softener, and since then, stools have gotten thinner and thinner... and he goes 2-3 times a day. > > We were down to just once a day before, when we started the GFCF diet. Before that he had " explosive " stools, with lots of gas, and he used to throw up at times. He eats very quickly, stuffs his mouth with food and swallows it without chewing much, and I thought that was the reason for this... But now I am almost convinced he is allergic/intolerant of milk, not so sure about gluten. > > I was wondering if any of you has had a similar stool story... (it would be better news that thinking he has a tumour...) His behavior has been pretty typical (perseverative, does not want to work, red face and ears at times) Our ped. has ordered several stool tests (fat, bacteria, yeast, culture) and also an abdomen plaque (or X-ray) to see if there is an obstruction somewhere. > > Well, this is all for now! > > Coral > > >
Guest guest
Coral, Luke's stools were VERY much like this before SCD. Either explosive with lots of gas and pain, you could hear him across the house, and just mostly brown liquid and floating mucus or what even looked like oil.. or he'd have pencil thin stools, just tons of it, it would just keep coming - he'd go almost every time he peed. With SCD his stools have already firmed up and he only goes once a day, sometimes every other day. He told me of his own, " The tummy doesn't hurt. The tummy is better " . Big change!! And we are not dairy free, so unless you have some other reason, I wouldn't necessarily cut that out - the yogurt is a great source on this diet. in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/salicylate intolerant/diarrhea pre-SCD; , age 3, healthy; and , 19 mos, healthy All SCD since 1/26/04 New here - ribbon stools > Hi, I am new here. > > I have not read Elaine's book yet, I ordered it about a week ago, and it should be here any time!!! Guest guest
Welcome to the list Coral, My sons bowel story reads similar to yours. Before SCD he used to have 5-8 soft mushy bm's / day. At times they would be explosive and go right through his diaper (what a mess!). Shortly after going 100% SCD he started having occasional trophies (formed bowel movements) and now has 1- 2 trophies / day. On the road to healing his bowel movements became ribbony. They would be thicker or thinner and eventually they are now what I'd call regular cylindrical bm's. Is it possible the stool softener is irritating the bowels and that's why they are getting thinner. Is he getting a bloated belly? My son usually had a bloated belly when the bm's were getting worse. BTW, how old is your son? My son is now four and is finally starting to chew his food. Thank goodness! The red ears and red face sound like phenol sensitivity that others have mentioned. Maybe others will comment since we don't have trouble with phenols.
