Here are a couple of possible reasons that I have found for the presence of question marks in PTManager messages: 1. In the United States, message text composed in plain Ascii (pronounced AS-kee, for American Standard Code for Information Interchange) translates the most universally between all the different computer systems and e-mail programs out there. Ascii is limited to 128 characters, and many of those are nonprinting control characters like tabs. All of the upper- and lower-case letters in the English alphabet are represented in basic Ascii, as are standard punctuation marks like periods and exclamation marks. Double and single quotation marks, however, are represented by the symbols used to denote feet and inches, which are often referred to as " straight " quotes. Typographer's quotation marks (also called " curly " quotes) and other characters are not in the standard Ascii set and are rendered incorrectly on the screen in mail systems that can handle only Ascii. 2. Other sets of characters and text- encoding standards were developed, but these can vary by language or even choice of computer platform. If you have a message that looks odd on the screen or includes a lot of foreign characters, changing the text- or character-encoding settings within your mail program may help. When I am going through my work DSL and accessing AOL from my browser at work, then my emails have a bunch of question marks thrown in. The user of the metatag, invisible to human web surfers, is advertising to search engines. It's like me posting a sign in my clinic window that says 'Physical Therapy' - but no humans can see it - only search engines. Advertising is advertising - the technology has changed but not the intent. Tim , PT timrichpt@... Optimal Physical Therapy, LLCI don't disagree with that at all... I merely pointed out that the owner of the website in question did NOT use the term " Physical Therapy " anywhere on the website, and only the word " Therapy " provided the google search result. You can prevent false advertising, but just because I have a metatag - I.E. a word that when searched on google returns my website as one of the hits - that says " physical therapy " does not mean I'm advertising that I perform physical therapy, only that I want people who search for physical therapy to find my website too. The website in question does not use the term 'physical therapy', so nothing has been done that would warrant us requesting a change or a regulation of this person's business website.
