Hi there..Aidan (8 mos) has only been in his helmet for one week

full time. He is adjusting well but we're noticing that the top of

his head in the back (on the flat side) looks pointier than it used

to. The helmet seems to fit good..we can tell where the open spaces

are and the tighter fitting areas. The helmet is not tight at all

where the crown (or hole cutout) area is. Is it possible to have

the head get pointier in that area...has anyone ever heard of

that?? The Ortho has also placed a piece of foam in the back middle

of the helmet (a vertical strip) to keep it from sliding around.

He's losing a little hair there from the chafing...but he assures me

that the piece of foam won't inhibit growth or cause a flat spot

there. Any ideas or similar experiences?? My only other

explanation for noticing the pointier area is that his head is just

growing all over including up a little...?? Also at 8 months I

don't think only one week would cause any change...even a negative

one. ?? Of course it's Friday and I can't get in touch with an

Ortho..so I'm debating about weekend wear.

Dear Amy,

I cannot believe that putting a strip of foam in the back of a helmet is

good practice, its sounds as if the helmet has been made wrong. The helmet

is supposed to restrict growth in certain areas and allow growth, where it

is required.

Would a strip in the middle not tend to want the head to grow on either side

of the strip, leaving an indented portion where the foam strip is.

I look forward to other peoples comments, please feel free to shoot me down

in flames, if you think I am wrong.

Ian.

We had the strip of foam and it's so squishy that I can't imagine it

causing any problems. ours was loose in the center, we could if we

wanted slip a finger down into it more in the front then the back.

The otehr kids I know with this helmet that we see on a weekly basis

also have a loose center. had the foam in there from week 2

till the end. he did remove one piece of the foam.
