Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I wanted to reply to your post to say that I can think of situations where young banding would be warranted. One would be already severe plagio and asymmetries, another would be repo isn't an option. Reasons repo wouldn't be an option could be baby has tort(making correction by repo almost totally impossible), already having several children (might be unable to devote time and energy to aggressively repo), baby is in daycare (where the daycare provider won't conform to aggressive repo requirments), or inability despite best efforts to get nighttime repo happening. Repo just isn't an option for some babies, and in these cases, their plagio/asymmetries could easily be worsened over time. It's so necessary for parents to realize when repo isn't working, so that they can move on to more appropriate treatment with Helmets and Bands. I can't speak for Cranial Tech, but I know that they had some participation in the recently proposed, updated guidelines that were presented to the AAP (American Association of Pediatricians) last year. These guidelines state that cranial orthoses MAY be indicated for babies age 3 - 5 months (not definitely indicated). Here is the link to the article about the proposed guidelines; I haven't heard when or if they will be adopted by the AAP (if the link is two lines long, you may need to copy and paste the entire link to your address bar): http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf/news/8525697700573E1885256DD 5007FCDB8? Guest guest
Sandy, My Hannah is one of those babies who fit into the early banding category. She was born with her plagio and was diaginosed as very severe (despite our efforts to repo) at only 3 mos. Her head and ears continued to worsen even though we were trying to aggresively repo her, so we had her banded as quickly as we could. Two bands and seven months later she still was not at 100%. I can only imagine if we had waited even longer. She had the best and quickest correction in that first month. If our insurance hadn't given us the runaround for another month and we had been able to get her in the band a month sooner, maybe we would have seen even better correction. , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad (banded at 4.5 and 7.5 mos) Cape Cod, Ma > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
Hi, Our German Dr. Blecher, does not fit helmets to babies under 5 months, he would advise repo, at the earliest possible indication of plagio, then fit a helmet after 5 months if there was no improvement.
