Guest guest
I joined Pecanbread a few days ago. I've been on the SCD for about a week. During my research I have come to the conclusion that my daughter should be on this also. Maddie is 13, has Down Syndrome. She had or has (?) Hirschsprung's Disease. As an infant she had a colostomy and at 20 months a pull through. She has chronic diaherrea and not much control. Are there other's here that are not dealing with Autisim? I have a few questions. School lunches and snacks. How do you handle them? Have you included the food needs in an IEP? Cooking. nut flours. Is it just a matter of buying the nuts and using a food processor. Does anyone own a Kitchen Aid mixer and the grinder attachement? My husbands been balking at including her in this diet. He's worried that she's going to miss out on too much. I've been slowing surprising the family with SCD ok recipes. Yesterday we had the Peanut butter brownies. YUMMMM. The pan was finshed by the end of the day. Last night I fixed chicken breasts, dipped in egg and almond flour and saute veggies. Another big hit. Tonight we are going for the zucchini lasagna. Thank you all for letting me listen in on your your conversations this week. I'm not sure how to sign my name I know that there are other Jody's here. You can either call me Jody B or Griff. Guest guest
I have my whole family on the diet and even though we didn't think 4 of us needed it, we are all benefitting by it. I do have one autistic child but I also have a celiac child. I understand celiac is fairly common with down syndrome. My older 2 kids don't have GI problems but they still have shown signs of die-off and find they have better memory. My autistic son has had chronic diarrhea since he was a baby and 2 years of GFCF only reduced it. SCD has completely eliminated it within the first 2 weeks. My husband and celiac son also had diarrhea which is now a thing of the past. Regarding the IEP, yes, include diet. Having it on record makes it easier to force the teachers to comply. It is amazing how often food is brought into the classroom and freely given to kids. I don't have great advise regarding lunches because I homeschool all my kids except my 4 year old autistic son. Regarding nut flour, I just posted that I discovered buying almond flour already ground saves me $3.08 per pound over buying blanched almonds and grinding them myself. I do have a kitchenaide but find I use my food processor more with SCD cooking. > I joined Pecanbread a few days ago. I've been on the SCD for about > a week. Guest guest
Welcome to the list. There are others who are not dealing with autism. I'll let them speak for themselves. I am currently working on a new section for the website for lunch ideas. (If anyone has any others the want included, please send them to me soon.) The best suggestion I have for lunches is to invest in a good Thermos. A stainless steel Thermos brand thermos. They cost about $15, but they keep food hot for a long time. That way you can send hot meat, veggies or soups with her for lunch. It will prevent her stuff from needing to be warmed up by someone. And feel free to sign your name " Jody B. " . Also, if you include your child's name and diagnosis (optional) and length of time on the diet, no one will get us confused. The other Jody with a Y is a grown up with celiac disease. If we all remember to sign our posts with the info, I think we will be fine. Jody mom to -5 and -7 SCD 13 months
Guest guest
Jody B/Griff Welcome! I am new too and everyone here has been super helpful! We started the diet for my son Sam. He has not been diagnosed, but we know he has sensory issues and we think he also may have a language processing delay. He never had any gut issues that we knew of other than really bad constipation now and then. I never realized that it may have to do with leaky gut or yeast... Now I think he has always had a problem with at least yeast his whole life. I think this added to his sensory issues and caused some unfavorable behaviors. We've only been on the diet for about 2 weeks now and had some regression in behavior, but he seems much better today. We haven't figured out the school lunch thing either! Sam has been sick so hasn't really been for a full day since we started the diet. Also, all tree nuts are banned from our school which makes it difficult! But lots of the moms here have suggested chicken soup, hamburger patties, chicken pancakes/cupcakes, sneaky veggie pancakes....there's a whole bunch of recipes at pecanbread.com that are great. I use my Kitchen Aide grinder to make hamburger, but I haven't tried it for nuts yet. I'm not sure how fine the nuts would turn out that way? I came out with a decent pecan meal using my food processor, but we really aren't to that point yet. Good luck! Guest guest
I second the thermos recommendation. I basically send in a thermos practically anything he would have eaten if he were at home - meatballs, grilled chicken, bacon, scrambled eggs, cooked veggies, fruit etc. > Welcome to the list. > > There are others who are not dealing with autism.
