Guest guest
I believe this will be based on your state regulations. In WI, PTAs need to be supervised by PTs per state statues. Or can only PT's supervise a PTA, and OTR's supervise COTA's? Then the next question.. if we can have a PTA, do you know of someone looking for part-time work in the Northern California area? If so, please let us know. We are a small Hand Therapy clinic in Santa , Ca. and having difficulty finding therapists available in this area. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi, Cathi - Thanks for the great question! The " PTA " is a " physical therapist assistant " , and I know that the APTA's Guide to Practice is pretty clear that they may only function as a subordinate to physical threapist. I do not have the California PT practice act in my hands, but I believe that it only provides for PTAs to work in the physical therapy realm, which is separate totally distinct from the OT world. But... if I'm really pressed and forced to be real creative, I suppose that if someone volunteered in an OT practice and the practice did not hold them out as being related to OT -- or attempt to charge or bill for their work -- they might be able to do it, regardless of whether they were a PTA, clergyman, or Ph.D. exercise physiologist or plumber. In the interest of Evidence Based Practice Management, has any of your OTs produced any credible reference suggesting that it is acceptable? Guest guest
Cathi Only a PT can supervise a PTA as a PTA. The OTR would not be able to provide supervision of a PTA to perform physical therapy. If the PTA is performing occupational therapy then he would have to be considered an Aide as he is outside of his scope of practise. All supervision requirements for an aide and all applicable restrictions would apply. There may be other restrictions depending on pay type and whether your clinic is functioning as a PT or OT in private practise or you are certified as a Rehab Agency or CORF. Guest guest
Cathi: An occupational therapy assistant must be supervised by an occupational therapy assistant.
