Guest guest
How do you feel on a GF diet? I am surprised that the numbers would still be so high, but with numbers like that, I'd say you have celiac disease, if not a strong gluten sensitivity. One big problem for people newly going on a GF diet is finding all the places that gluten hides. It is hard to make sure everything is GF. How have you gone about a GF diet? I would base much of it on your reaction to a GF diet. Maybe it takes longer than 5 weeks for numbers to come down. Good luck, Elaine mlkaresh wrote: Hi everyone Here's my story, I'll try and make it short. In May I was tested for Celiac and it came back Postive (IGG 80, IGA 44). I had a biopsy done, which was negative but I was also on a medicane (steriod for Crohns Disease) at the time which could have caused a false negative. I had my bloodwork done again for Celiacs and the IGG was 110 and the IGA was 44 (anything above 30 is positive.) So my doc. suggested I go on a gluten free trial for a month. I was gf for 5 weeks and just got my blood results back and they are the same. Has anyone heard of this before? Does anyone know why the bloodwork (esp. IGA) would be positive. Thanks for any info:)
Guest guest
It can take a lot longer than 5 weeks for the numbers to go down. Usually you would be tested again after 6 months or so. That would give you a better indication that the diet was working. Are your symptoms improving on the diet? I would say to stick with it, make sure you are not getting hidden gluten and have another blood test done in 6 months. You should see the numbers start to go down. It can sometimes take a long time for the antibody numbers to go down to negative levels, and ideally if you are 100% gf you should be able to get your numbers down to zero. But only if you never get contaminated at all. It is nearly impossible to stay uncontaminated. mlkaresh wrote: Hi everyone Here's my story, I'll try and make it short. Thanks for any info:) Hi, My doctor read my labs as being normal when he got them back but they were also sent to another pathology dept. for a second opinion and they reported the biopsy as consistent with celiac...so that may or may not be why your labs were negative. Also I was told to start the Glutenfree diet and redo blood tests in 3-4 mos. so maybe the five weeks wasn't long enough to bring your numbers down and also can't rule out hidden gluten or cross contamination that you may not be aware of. I'm very new to this also (had positive blood test end of June and finally got my biopsy reports a couple weeks ago) and some days I feel like I've been doing good and then all of a sudden I'll get bouts of the runs so I suspect I got into something that was Gluten tainted. If your IGA is positive then from what everyone has been telling me and what I've read then that's a pretty good indicator that it's celiac since it's more specific. IGG is more sensitive and if positive may not necessarily mean celiac could be something else. (don't quote me on any of this...like I said I'm new too and going by what I've been told. The good news is that most of the people on here, especially those who've known about celiac for years and have been dealing with it for a while, seem to have the most consitant and accurate information when I've compared it to celiac research rather than going by what my own doctors have been telling me. They obviously aren't quite up to date on their information and I don't think they've seen too many people with celiac. Good luck with your diagnosis...hopefully you'll get a solid answer and can then move on to getting the right treatment versus playing the guessing game. :-) in VA
Guest guest
Hi, Do you know if your IgA was a Tissue Transglutaminase IgA? If not, your Antigliadin IgA can be high for Crohns as well as for Celiac. It would not be unusual at all to maintain high numbers after being GF for such a short time. It took 6 months for my numbers to budge at all, and 1yr for them to come close to normal. The older you are, and the more damage that has been done can relate to your numbers not going down as well. Also, IgG takes much longer to go down than IgA, and may not go down at all do to your Crohns disease. If you have not had the Ttg IgA done, it should be - and you can do the gene test as well. I am not a medical Doctor, but this is what I understand from my own experiences. Hope it helps. Good luck.
