Guest guest
Well, I guess I would choose which foods he will be allowed this weekend, and/or how much of each (which you seem to have done). And if he doesn't want what is allowed, then that's fine, just keep him well hydrated; if he doesn't eat much for a couple days it will likely be OK. Keep offering what IS allowed. However, I don't remember all the specifics on Kenzie, so: if you have problems with the above (like, he has a horrible reaction that you don't think is die off, or he gets aggressive and starts hurting people because he is so hungry, etc), then you may need to have a plan B. I am not the best to respond to this, because I am lucky that Adam eats a reasonable array (not a great array, but he is happy with sevearl meats and a few vegetables). And , who is a really picky eater, does not have any neurological problems and her gut problems are relatively mild compared to some of our ASD kids (including Adam), so I admit I give in to her often (she gets nut flour pancakes even though she hasn't eaten her meat from the night before, etc). She is a hard nut to crack, and has not expanded her diet to meat and veggies, except a few bites. So you are not alone. But I just wanted to be sure someone answers you. We know you are working so hard for your son. I also know how hard it is to feel your other kid(s) are getting shortchanged. Could you arrange to have them visit friends (even if only for the day)? Or is there a relative who could take them to the mall, or museum? Or could you just talk to them and tell them - THIS is what we're going to concentrate on this weekend (diet for Kenzie); I need your help to keep yourselves busy, or keep him busy, or whatever you need. And maybe arrange to take them and yourself to a movie on Sunday evening, while someone stays with Kenzie? Or, if he is cooperative, maybe you all could go wander the mall, go sledding, build a snow fort, see if the girls could create an obstacle course or treasure hunt in the house for all to try. Keeping Kenzie busy too may help everyone. Sorry if this kind of advice is way off base for your family, but I hope maybe something here sparks a helpful idea. -- Sue, mom to Adam and SCD 4 months
Guest guest
Hi Penny... I know you are trying so hard to make this work and I know how that feels! I am not as experienced as most here.. we've only been SCD legal for 6 months but I'll tell you what has helped us. After seeing Dr. McCandless we stopped the grape and apple juice that I had done VERY diluted and switched to pear juice... I actually use the juice from making pear sauce and further dilute it. that has worked so nicely for us and it was just getting thrown out.. I also use pearsauce now rather than applesauce I used for months and my little boy has improved with that switch in fruit... but every child is different.. just throwing out ideas here. We also stopped the diluted carrot juice.. Elaine had told me I could juice carrots as healing took place and do it VERY diluted.. I was doing this but I really think it was a bit too soon... like she had warned.. so we are off carrots except for some cooked in chicken loaf/veggie loaf.. that has helped. We don't do beef.. came back with sky high cholesterol on testing and though some of that may be genetic.. we are sticking to chicken. He loves fish but I've eliminated it since it is virtually impossible to truly know if a particular purchase of fish is safe from a metals standpoint.. he is toxic to several metals. That's about it.... the pearjuice was a welcome change to him and has helped in place of the other juices we were using... just my experiences here for what it's worth! Good luck! Guest guest
I tried pear juice yesterday. He took one sip but wouldn't drink the rest. I'm going to have to get rid of the other juices and he'll just have to drink that or water. As for the carrots. Now I'm bummed. What can I juice as a vegetable to syringe into him that would be ok? I just now made him chicken nuggets using egg and almond flour and fried them. My hub and I thought they tasted great. He, of course, wouldn't eat them. He's driving me crazy with the cookies today. Guest guest
Hi Penny...... I think the carrot juice would definitely be better than no veggies at all. Did you mean that he refuses the cookies if you add any veggies to the cookie dough? I'm wondering if you could swap some of the honey for a very small amount of pureed squash..... I mean so small an amount that he couldn't detect it..... then next time add another teaspoon. Or just try making the cookies with a bit less honey..... the dough might be thicker but you might be able to add a touch of water if it's too thick. HOORAY for no pork rinds in three days!!! You're doing great, Penny. If you just don't give in to his " I need a fix " cravings, they actually should diminish or go away altogether before long. Have you ever tried SCD legal lemonade? A squirt of fresh lemon juice in water with sweet and low for sweetener. If he'd accept that, you might be able to eliminate the grape and apple juice for a while. Patti trying to do the right thing So you all know Kenzie has candida and I screwed up with all the fruit. He hasn't had pork rinds in three days. I've limited him to one banana in the morning but today he didn't even get that. He has had Welch's White Grape Juice watered down. Fresh squeezed apple juice, watered down. Suddenly doesn't want chicken any more but ate quite a bit of steak last night. Wants to eat a lot of almond flour cinnamon cookies. Mine come out really thin and he has had about six today. Guest guest
Penny, I'd keep the carrot juice for the moment. You're only getting a small amount syringed in...... he really needs the nutrients and the natural sugars in it would be preferable/less than those in apple or grape juice..... plus carrot juice naturally helps fight yeast. Are you adding garlic to it or would that be something he wouldn't go for? Sounds like he might be obsessing on the cookies due to not having his usual pork rinds as a crunchy treat. Wish we could get him to like some of the crunchy carrot curls or something. I think the cookies are certainly better for him than pork rinds, though. These are steps in the right direction. Once he's been off pork rinds for a couple of weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if he started opening up to more new things. Patti Re: trying to do the right thing > Hi Penny... Guest guest
Sue: I'm hoping the girls can go somewhere tomorrow but I'm not sure it's going to work out. No family and living in the middle of nowhere in Montana leaves for few options. I did sit them down and tried to explain it to them. Of course they didn't really understand " withdrawal " . It's now 2:30 and all he's eaten today are the cookies this morning and juice. I'm going to try to hang tough but he is really driving me crazy and I have two days to go. Thanks for your support. Guest guest
My son was getting obsessed with pineapple. He would only drink pineapple juice and wanted to eat pineapple. I felt it was the cause of his diaper rash. Without realizing it, he had me trained. Since I know he would only drink pineapple juice, that was the only thing I gave him to drink. If he would not eat his dinner, I would eventually give him some pineapple out of concern he gets something into him. It was not until I realized he will not eat anything I give him because because he was holding out for some pineapple that I changed. I stopped buying it all together. Once he came to realize he could not manipulate me, he finally started to eat more foods and drink water or other juices. I suspect your son is doing the same thing with cookies. I know it's hard but you may have to stop giving him cookies until he gives in with other foods. This is truly a battle of the wills. It is easier when you keep that in mind. P.S. Now that he is not eating the pineapple the diaper rash is finally gone! My suspicions were correct. > I tried pear juice yesterday.
