I just went to the web site to vote and for some reason it just struck me funny.

The one response was so unexpected I spilled my coffee.

:o) They make you enter two choices and I didn't know what to put for the

second one. There's no point putting a " no " answer up there. I just realized

that the poll really isn't helping things because it lists people by e-mail

and I can't connect everyone up to their e-mail very quickly :o/. So, I'm

still keeping a list and here is who I have so far...if there is a ** by

your name it means you get to be a team captain. We have 30 so far and if we

spilt in 5 or 6 per group we will need more captains (or we just have larger

groups)

  • 1 year later...

I have a few different ways of telling people. I usually start with I

can't eat wheat (or dairy, for us at least). If they ask if it is an

allergy, I explain that it is an intolerance, which is a little

different than an allergy. I will explain if they ask, but if they

don't ask then I leave it. Some people will ask a lot of questions and

then I will explain further. But like Dana said, if their eyes glaze

over, then I know I've lost em. Since they asked the questions though,

usually they want to know. I don't immediately jump into the whole

gluten intolerance/Celiac Disease lecture though, I try to keep it

simple. Usually telling them that the gluten will cause intestinal

damage gets their attention and they are very supportive of my food

choices. And I do bring food along most times, just in case.'

God bless,

nn

I answered NO. But I recently found out that my 10 year old was made to

do a craft project with wheat pasta the other day. The kids had no idea

what the project was until the teacher brought out the pasta and had

them glue it to a can to make a pencil holder. I told my son, next time

that happens to ask to call home and I will bring him some rice pasta.

He said he washed his hands really good afterwards, but I'm not so

sure. His main symptom before was mood/emotional outbursts. He has

been a bit moody lately, but we have also been busy with other things

that have been keeping us up a bit later than normal. I don't want to

assume he got contaminated, he may just be tired, but I certainly would

feel better next time knowing he was using gf pasta! I plan to

reinforce this with the teacher, but she just really doesn't seem to

give it a second thought.
