Guest guest
I am new to the list (my first post) so please be patient. I have been reading a lot of the posts (my head is still spinning) but have some fundamental questions (which have proabably already been answered many times): 1) I need to know what the *most* reliable test (and where) for yeast has been for the people on this list. I would appreciate more than one option for testing. 2) Given that some amount of yeast is always present then how can we be sure when there is too much? I am paranoid about putting our son on this diet without some assurance that it was indeed absolutely necessary. 3) Would not Nystatin (or other anit-fungals) be a faster route to get rid of the yeast and then just continue with a relatively healthy diet that is low/moderate in sugars and carbs. We should all be on such a diet. 4) How do we know that the GI heals itself on the SCD? Or is SCD for life? Has anyone actually introduced regualr food without serious repercussions? 5) SCD Youghurt seems to be an important component but does anyone out there have experience previously being GFCF then introducing SCD youghurt with success? I am assuming that SCD youghurt still contains casein.... I am really wanting to get into high gear with whatever interventions make sense (and SCD sounds like one of them) but am just a little overwhelmed by the overlaps in the and *potential* conflicts in approaches Thanks in advance .... one day I hope to be able to help a newbie! Guest guest
Comments interspersed.... There are several you can do. For my kiddo I had her ped run a stool test from out local lab and had them grow it for about 14 days. Positive for candida. Great Smokies Labs, Meta-Metrix, DDI are good ones you can have them done there as well - I'm pretty sure. For convenience and cost we just do ours here. 2) Given that some amount of yeast is always present then how can we be sure when there is too much? I am paranoid about putting our son on this diet without some assurance that it was indeed absolutely necessary. I can usually tell by my daughters behavoirs. I would have thought that a long time ago as well. However, knowing that her diet is very unhealthy, this is a much better diet for her to be on anyways. She was eating only foods that were contributing to yeast overgrowth and were bad for her. 3) Would not Nystatin (or other anit-fungals) be a faster route to get rid of the yeast and then just continue with a relatively healthy diet that is low/moderate in sugars and carbs. We should all be on such a diet. Nystatin is the most benign anti-fungal, however it didn't touch dd's candida, works for some not others. Diflucan did the trick, however, I later learned that Diflucan and other anti-fungals were hard on the liver. Some ASD kids have problems with liver functioning already, I didn't want to continue this type of treatment. I use GSE (GrapeFruit Seen Extract) and OoO (Oil of Oregano)- I don't think that OoO is SCD legal tho - because these are much better for her. 4) How do we know that the GI heals itself on the SCD? Or is SCD for life? Has anyone actually introduced regualr food without serious repercussions? As far as knowing, the science behind the diet will give you some answers, take a look at the pecanbread website. That would all depend on your child. Each child is different, you never know, once you start eating healthy and seeing the progress that he can make, it might be nothing more than yours or his choice about staying on SCD. 5) SCD Youghurt seems to be an important component but does anyone out there have experience previously being GFCF then introducing SCD youghurt with success? I am assuming that SCD youghurt still contains casein.... This one I'm fuzzy on, depending on what type of milk you use casein could be a problem. You could wait on yogurt until later on in the diet and see how he handles this then. Karyn, Mom to 4.1, dx autism, GF/CF, SCD 2 weeks I am really wanting to get into high gear with whatever interventions make sense (and SCD sounds like one of them) but am just a little overwhelmed by the overlaps in the and *potential* conflicts in approaches Thanks in advance .... one day I hope to be able to help a newbie!
