Guest guest
After five months on SCD, we finally are getting those trophy poops everyone talks about. Here is what finally did the trick for us: one cup of homemade beet juice every day. THis was recommended by our DAN doctor. WE mix it with homemade carrot juice, apple or pear juice to make it sweeter. Ever since we've been on the beet juice, my dd has had 2-3 trophies a day! She had been all backed up, and was getting diarrhea (leakage around). The beet juice apparently helps the poops to move. Her tummy is nice and flat now! Just a month ago, she was so bloated, a little girl came up to her and asked " baby in there? " Hannah 4/30/
Guest guest
Gee, I think I need this for MYSELF! Do you just buy fresh beets and use a juicer? I've never bought a beet. I'm not just new to SCD, I'm new to the kitchen, the produce dept, etc... (blush) I'm half kidding, but seriously.. . Thanks! in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/salicylate intolerant/diarrhea pre-SCD; , age 3, healthy; and , 19 mos, healthy All SCD since 1/26/04 Perfect Poops with Beet juice! Guest guest
, I'm sorry I didn;t respond sooner. I just use a juicer. Every day I put in one or two beets, enough to make about 1/2 cup of juice. Somtimes I mix it with fresh carrot juice, apple juice, etc. But lately we've been steering away from apples due to salicylate problems, so mostly I just give my daughter straight beet juice. She does prefer it mixed. SOmetimes, it's a bit of a struggle to get her to drink it. I give it to her on an empty stomach (after her nap usually) and she knows she has to drink it before she can get her meal! I beleive juices are best digested on an empty stomach. I see yoru son has Apsergers. My daughter is probably an Aspie too. WHat treatments have you found most effective for him? Hannah, almost 3 > Gee, I think I need this for MYSELF! Guest guest
Thanks, I think I'm going to have to try this, for MYSELF, not Luke. Nothing seems to effectively take care of my constipation. And from this list I've learned that flat or thin stools after several days of being " backed up " means there's still stool stuck in there - yuck. That explains a lot, I often have pain and gas even after things have finally gotten " moving " . The gastro Dr told me I had a " pretzel " colon and it literally feels like things get " stuck " in there. The prune nectar regiment isn't helping me anymore. I will try beet juice. Plus, I think veggie juices would be an excellent nutritional source for the kids. Just don't want to start them on it too soon while on SCD, so have been waiting. But may just get that juicer and get started with myself, here. SCD has helped me a lot - my appetite is much better, I am not bloated after eating a tiny bit of food as I was before, but I sure would like to settle in to a somewhat normal routine of BM's. I've tried juggling the diet but can't pinpoint any one thing that would make me constipated, and I try to balance out the types of foods I'm eating. As for Luke, when he'd just turned 3 the neurodevelopmental ped dx'd him as PDD but told me then she felt certain he'd eventually get the dx of Asperger's. He was given that by the nuero here in Charlotte, at 4 1/2. I was determined to have him in mainstream pre-K because he's so bright and " high functioning " but it was a nightmare. He is in a cross-cat class now and doing great. So I guess I'd have to say, don't rush things, I learned that lesson. Modeling proper manners and language is huge. Constantly using social stories or role play or just plain modeling, to help him learn how to handle various social situations, and give him the language needed to navigate his way with peers. Forcing him out of his routines is a big one, gradually getting him more and more comfortable with variety and change. I would NOT force those things that " all kids do " at this age - we wanted him in soccer, that was a bust. He'd much prefer to be at home with us, just messing around. So no organized sports have worked and he'd rather not anyway, so why push, right? At birthdays we invite one friend rather than a whole slew, that works best. Lots of OT has been helpful, mostly by US here at home, he only gets 45 mins a week officially but almost everything we do is some type of OT. Scheduling his day around periods of activity and periods of calm really helps. Plenty of opportunities for things like water play, trampoline jumping, swinging, etc. His sensory issues can really get out of control if things are " whacked " one day, and he'll be LITERALLY bouncing off the walls OR us, but most days that is not the case anymore. He's learned most of his " content " and skills from the PC, we have about every educational game there is, and all the books on CD-Rom. He's a total hacker and just loves the computer. He memorizes the stories/games almost immediately so we have to be careful to get ones that model good social skills, etc, he uses the scripts as his language with other people, just adapts it to the situation he's in. Diet, of course, has been HUGE, I think THE main thing that has allowed him to improve. And all the consistency and patience we can muster. When things start to escalate or he's becoming difficult, I always try to think, " What's in his head right now? Why is he doing what he's doing? " That's the key. If I can get to THAT, then we can move forward. More more more than anything we spend a lot of time in prayer over him and all 3 kids, for wisdom to know & understand them, and to do what is best for them. Guess that's a bit of a rambling answer there, sorry. Guest guest
I want to clarify here, that when I say " juggling the diet " and different types of food, etc, I mean ALL LEGAL.
