Hi all,

I am a physical therapist in California. I am going to open a clinic soon and

my major source of referral is worker's comp. My question is do I need to be in

the preferred provider network in order to see worker's comp patients? What is

your experience of treating worker's comp patients compare with private

insurance and medicare?

Thanks for any feedback!

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

I own a billing service and specialize in Physical

Therapy so we bill some PT services for in-network and

some out of network. To date, the out of network

clinics are much better off, as far as reimbursement.

When you bill work comp your claims are reduced to the

work comp fee schedule as required by law. That is low

as I am sure you know but in-network providers also

have the " contract discount " , which can be

significant. You just need to see for your area

whether your referrals will be affected by not

joining. If it is not an issue I would hold off

joining because of lower reimbursement.

Hope this helps.
