Guest guest
Welcome! There are a lot of good people with a lot of good help for all of us here. Dean I personally know someone who literally is older than dirt. If you would like to meet him, please write to me or join us on the Masters List: masterslist-subscribe new member, > I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. I was just diagnosed about 2 months ago with type 2 diabetes. Yeah it's been an adjustment. No more eating those huge boles of Ice-cream I love so much. I've lost about 15 pounds so far, and I've just started using the acucheck voicemate glukometer. My sugar's run around 133. I realize that's a little high, but the doctor says I'm making progress. I'm on glukophage and lucinapril. I'm from Colorado Springs, but now live in New Brighton, PA. I decided to make a major life change after a real nasty divorce. I went in to be checked for an upper respiratory virus I couldn't seem to shake. After a Euren check, that's how they found the diabetes. I still didn't believe it so they did the sugar check and it was 319. Well I was convinced, and have begun taking my meds, and doing what ever else I can to take control of this disease. > Take care. > > > > If I was as sure of God as I am about the ground beneath my feet, how often would I think of God? > >

Guest guest
Welcome to the list, . We have a number of type 2 members who are more than willing to help you out. It sounds like you are going at it the right way, although you still need to get the sugars down some. Do you do sugars more than once a day? That is really the best way to tell how you are doing-a blood sugar 2 hours after you eat will tell you if you are eating right or not. new member, I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
It is important that you vary fingers with the glucose test. Also, stick the oute edge of your fingers-not the middle. They do get sore, but varying where you do it will help with that. I use all my fingers and thumbs except my Braille reading one! Re: new member, Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I've gotten pretty good with checking my sugar, but how do you avoid sore fingers? Lolololololollolol. I'm not kidding. I use the little one on my right hand, cause it seems to bleed easier. But after awhile it's quite sore. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
, Usually a high BG like that means you h ave eaten too many carbohydrates for your meal. Low carbs are recommened for especially type 2 diagetics. Insulin works only on carbs, so more protein and vegetables-and even higher fat will keep your sugars down. Your doc should send you for diabaetic education classes. And, hopefully, these classes will teach carbohydrate counting. Re: new member, I did just check my sugar and it was 156. Guest guest
kevin, dont prick the pads of your fingers. use the sides of the finger. remember you have two sides to each finger so use one finger on monday, the next one on tuesday , the next one on wednesday etc. whatever works for you.if you continue to use the pads of the finger, it will hurt and you will get frustrated. hope this helps, karen from canada new member, >> >> >>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
, It depends on what sugar free stuff you eat. Some has lots of carbs because it is made of flour and/or fruit-or they use something like sorbitol or other sugar alcohols for sweetening. Have someone read you the ingredients on thngs and that will give you're the amounts of grams of carbs. If you like pork rinds, they have no carbs and are a crunchy snack. Also, all kinds of fresh vegetables can be used to fill you up. Others on the list can give you other ideas too. Re: new member, I have tried the sides of my fingers, and find that getting blood is a bit more difficult than the pads, but since I don't want to have any problems reading, than I'll try the sides. And as for carbs, we really try and watch the carbs. My sweety Lynn Mester really tries to watch what I eat. She feels like she's starving me, but I reassure her that this is what I need to do to control this diabetes. I get so dang hungry at night, I feel like I could eat just about anything. I especially like the sugar free stuff, but I hear tell that that stuff is loaded with carbs also. Guest guest
Hi , I know from the Old Radio days when I chaired radio conventions and did a weekly show or 2 or 3 or more. In any event, I was surprised to see your name here and sad to find out about your diagnosis. I have collected tons of articles on the computer from this list as well as other places and would be happy to send all or some to you. I was diagnosed in 2003 and my A 1 c is currently 5.4. It is up 1/10 of a point from last time. In any event, we're here to help. Larry Gassman At 12:29 PM 4-29-2006, you wrote: >I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
Hi , Yup, this term " sugar free " is very, very misleading. As has pointed out it is the " total " carbs in a product which you need to be concerned with. Also, the term " net " carbs is another misleading piece of garbage. The term " no sugar added " is equally bad as what it actually means is that they have not added processed beet or cane sugar. They may well have added the sugar alcohols or fructose, sucrose or other " oses " and those things do contain carbs. The term " dietetic " is easily confused with the term " diabetic " and, my friend, they just ain't the same. I think you will find this list and the folks on it really helpful. They sure helped me get a handle on Diabetes when I hooked up with my wife who is a Diabetic. Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
Hi : You are right about the sugar free stuff and the fact that it can be loaded with carbs. I've got Bob trained to read labels and he's gotten to the point that if he thinks that something is higher in carbs than I ought to have he advises against the purchase. Like you I used to be ravenous most of the night when I first made the dietary changes, but that has gotten better. My sugar readings have come down since I began taking Avandia twice daily and are staying within the normal range. Guest guest
Thanks for the encouragement, Harry. One day I hope to be able to brag that I've lost fifty or a hundred pounds, but time will tell. Guest guest
HI Mike: How did the doctors determine that you are Type One? I'm not being nosy here, but I have a good reason for asking. I don't think that the Avandia is going to control my sugars for very long and have always questioned my diagnosis since Diabetes has been passed down from my paternal grandmother to most of her descendants. Guest guest
Let's see ... As late as the summer of 2004, I had an A1C in the normal, nondiabetic range. There were no indications that I might have diabetes. In fact, as late as Christmas, 2004, I believe I was normal. Then I got a horrendous case of the flu (I couldn't get the vaccine as I didn't fit the criteria). By the end of January, my skin was dry, I was urinating more than usual and had begun to notice that lesions didn't heal quite properly.By the end of February, 2005, I had myself tested for diabetes. I was finding it harder to concentrate and do difficult thinking tasks and my O & M wasn't as good as it usually is. But before I could get the lab results back, on a weekend trip to Seattle, I landed in the hospital with sky-hy BP, cramps in the legs, acitone on the breath etc. In other words, I was in ketoacidosis -- very unusual for a Type 2 although not unknown. I believe the docs did a C Peptide test though not sure. If so, it showed I had virtually no insulin in my system. The guys in the E R started an IV and did the tests and by the time I was admitted, the doc came into my room and said " you have diabetes and you'll be on insulin from here on out! " . I thank God the docs were able to think outside the box and didn't let my age prejudice their thinking. Bottom line: my medical history (I had no diabetes in the family that I knew although I now find out that a grandfather I never knew had Type 1 diabetes) plus my medical history (normal A1C nine months before and ketoacidosis upon presentation) and the C peptide test told the docs I have what is called LADA -- Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults -- essentially, Type 1 diabetes, even though I'm toward the end of middle-age. There was no messing with oral meds or discussion of diet controlling the disease though I of course learned about diet, carb-counting, etc. Summary: my symptoms didn't fit Type 2 -- the onset was too sudden. Guest guest
One more thought: although genes matter in Type 1, they're even more important in Type 2. So just because your grandparents had diabetes doesn't mean you've got Type 1. Mike > HI Mike: > > How did the doctors determine that you are Type One? Guest guest
ROP stands for: retinitis of prmaturity. Re: new member, I know about RLF, but what does r o p stand for? The carb counting guide is on its way. Every body talks about low fat diets, but to a diabetic knowing the carb count is more important. Insulin works on carbs, not fat and not protein. I was diagnosed as a diabetic following my first heart attack in 1987. My cardiologist was right about one thing. He told me not to eat more than two ounces of fat at a single meal. He was right about the two ounces, but he should have said no more than two ounces of carbs at a single meal. The carbs consumed affects your lipid levels more so than the fat consumed. new member, >>> >>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list. Guest guest
To keep your stomach full protein, a lot of it, is the key. I eat lots of meat, and the wonderful thing about it is it contains practically no carbs. new member, >>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>> I'm Shields and I'm a new member to this list.
